We shouldn't complain about such things. Cos we must compare ourselves with the 3rd world countries and realize Singapore is very good already. For eg, if you look at India, people often climb onto the trains dangerously for lack of space. So our train breakdowns are nothing in comparison. Singaporeans just like to complain.
We also must blame ourselves. If we want more comfort, as someone recently said, buy a car! If cannot afford it, blame ourselves again. Why aren't we rich enough to afford a car? It means we are not financially capable. We must improve and upgrade ourselves to earn more money. Foreigners who come here work hard. They don't complain. Singaporeans only know how to make noise, as I frequently read.
Or better still, why not we all obediently listen to Khaw Boon Wan? He is a well-respected man in the government. He said we should try to cycle to work. Very fashionable. Many in big European cities cycle.

How many years since Shopping Auntie quit? Even now you are paying her incompetence. At the end of the day how many man-hours wasted? :bsmilie::bsmilie:
And also, who was the incompetent twit who put her in charge? :bsmilie:

i am not sure you are sarcastic or what. this rate of breakdowns wont happen in Japan. coz the top management will sure kanna fired one. here in sg, top management can still lak kopi.
I'm only looking in from afar and are not aware of which line broke down - but the first trains started running in 1987. Nearly 30 years. Their design life was probably 30 years. Those original trains have run long and hard. At 15-20 years they should have gotten nearly totally rebuilt to ensure reliable running to the end of their life.
Also the first tracks will be 'suffering' from near 30 years hard use - the original control systems will now be obsolete and in need of replacement - and will become progressively more unreliable unless 'refreshed'.
But train rebuilds and control systems upgrades are expensive and very 'un sexy' from a management point of view, especially if your prime objective to to enhance shareholder value - the longer you can defer the big ticket replacement items, the better.
SMRT should have been putting money aside for years to pay for replacement equipment - have they been doing so ?. Or will ultimately the state and thus the taxpayer have to pick up the tab for replacing those 'life expired' assets ?

With the trend of going for 'design and build' contracts especially government linked project, things are getting worse. Only advantage for Such projects is you leave everything to others and you don't get blame but just point your finger.
Whether pointing in or out, the people using it still suffer. What happen to the good old days?
When Saw PH was at the helm, IIRC it was reported that the money went to create more retail business and not maintenance.
.............wonder how both of them ended up as the CEO when they have no prior experience in the industry..how meritocracy works in Singapore?

I like this guy who feedback in 97.2 said. LTA imposed heavy fine on SMRT. Next SMRT cited high operation cost an ask fare review committee for fare increase. Request justifiable. Win-win for LTA and SMART. last part is by me. haha
