Chow Yuen Fatt has the privilege to shoot Gong Li on set... Guess, I have to settle for these heartlander Opera Singers...

Great captures of a lost art

1/6 the price of the Summilux it might be, but definitely not 1/6 of the quality :)

Was on aperture priority (AE), never noticed the speed. But on average, was 1/8s to 1/30s. I think most were 1/15s.

how did u get backstage? backstage pass? great shots!

Thanks! No need pass one... just need to have thick skin & thick skull... :bsmilie:

I noticed from your shots, those two things you certainly don't lack.

hahahaha.... that reminded me of another incident a few weeks ago at the Changi Airport Terminal 3.

I was happily snapping away at the new terminal and shot an old monk (about 70+ years old) in a grey robe at a cafe next to the Coffee Bean one at about 6pm+. He saw me pointing the R4A at him and then shouted at me some #&*%@^* which I don't understand what language he was saying.

I turned and walked away slowly... and a few minutes later... I felt someone pulling my shirt and grabbed my collar with a very strong force.... It was that old man grabbing my shirt with the left hand and he held his right high up and wanted to slap me!

He was so furious and utter in some words which I don't understand. I didn't know what language he spoke and pointed to the direction of the seats. He thought I was going to run away and pulled my shirt collar harder. He was so angry that he couldn't speak properly. And at the same time, he wanted to slap me like slapping a small kid.

In the end, I told him in mandarin, let me go to the seat and sit down first, then he loosen his grip and walked with me to the seats by the side. But his hand was still holding on to my shirt. I sat down, took out the R4A (I was holding my Rolleiflex at that time) from my A&A bag, rewind the film and passed the entire roll to him. Luckily it was the first frame. So I didn't loose much. He took the film and then reprimanded me. I didn't want to argue with him and explain why I took the picture, just wanted to let him let off his steam. He then walked away after simmering down and letting off the steam.

It took me a few minutes to compose myself again.

The last time someone threatened to slap me was my mum when I was a 10 year old kid... that incident really taught me something... It's not nice to be slapped.

haha.. all that just for a good picture
hats off to you chiif! if it was me, i would have either shot from the waist, or from distance or just simply forget about making the shot esp if he was staring at me. probably why my shots aren't good enough - cos i'm not close enough..

That sounds like a real hairy encounter. But what if you din had a spare camera to offload the bogus film? Would u give him the film from yr Rolleiflex? But then again he must have not noticed that you were photographing with another camera...

That why I said go shooting with us!! At least when you get slapped, Bernard and me can get a good series for street photography. Then when he turn on us, you can have a go too. And finally, if he gets a heart attack, it's easier for 3 of us to carry him to seek medical attention. Actually 2 of us to carry him to seek medical attention. One of us still get to shoot the series.

Cheers,

That's why need to learn to shoot from the hip. ;p

Indeed Chiif being slapped by a 70 year old monk will make a great series. He'll need to pratice on his sneaky, dodgy look.

The irony of being manhandled by a monk instead of drunk bikers, backstreet kids on speed, religious extremists on riot, etc.
