The new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

He couldn't get over the price and the 5.6 (btw, can't see myself doing it either, too heavy). Perhaps if it's a 2.8-4 it might be easier to digest.

I just need to ask. It's really an ackward design, more like a plumbing tool than a L lens from Canon. When I zoomed it, the way it extended was really ... :dunno:. I am sure the quality is good ... But it's to me and at the moment, one of Canon's 'less attractive pieces'.

If it is priced at just around 1K, it will definitely become a hot property...hehe. Great lens but lousy pricing. Jared Polin said he would rather we spend the money on 3 separate very good lenses than throwing away the entire budget on this baby (more than S$2,200 with GST!).

Which brings me to the next cheaper alternative at less than one third the price (S$720 with GST): the new Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD

"Focuses fast and image stabilization works well. I compared the IQ to the Canon 70-200 f4 L and it was close -- very close..." said a reviewer...

Some raving reviews started pouring in for this lens:

Oh well...can only look from afar as the Canon mount version isn't here at all (demand more than supply in Japan now)...

To sum it all up

+ Extremely Sharp, Very Sharp , Tack sharp
+ Well Built
+ L

- Price too high for a f5.6 lens
- Relatively Small aperture
- Extends When Zoomed in
- 100mm shorter than 100~400L
- Cannot be mounted Canon's Extension Tubes (needs clarification)

it all boils down to what we need i guess
not for me for sure though , i want a 135 USM f2.0L :)

Some sample pics taken with the lens in this thread: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=815240&page=3

No extension Tubes is one disadvantage, although we wont be able to use AF, but is till good for some static items if needed.

Price is really another factor, 1.3k~1.5k will be a gd price. At almost 2k, I think I will choose 100-400L which higher zoom and optional extension tube.

Compact, Sharpness is what I really like about this lens. As for f5.6 is doesn't really brother me so much...if it is at f4 or f2.8, I believe this lens will easily goes 3k (which is quite out of my budget)

The lens is only S$1.95k. no where near 3k, the 70-200 F2.8 II is 3K haha.....

i was considering the 100-400L too but decided against it due to the older generation of IS (owned this 100-400 for about 2 yrs previously), the new generation on the 70-300 really works extremely well!

Optically, apart from 100mm less range then the 100-400, this 70-300 really shines, i dare say even better then my previous 70-200 F4 IS which was already known as one of canon's best zoom lens before the 2.8 Mk II came out.

3rd party teleconvertors can be used too :) just not the official canon ones :p

Wasn't the 70-200 F4 touted as the sharpest ever Canon lens?

These lenses are all incredibly sharp in their own right, and it would really be splitting hairs to determine which is (slightly) sharper.

Heh guys...for those who find the best (Canon of course) 70-300mm expensive...the Tamron SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (great reviews everywhere except) for Canon is here liao. Its cost about $700+ only and as good as Canon version except for IQ (base on reviews) a tad lower than Canon...can go molest it at AP..they have only 2 pcs.

As the presenter Lok Tse suggested, none of this controversy would have arisen had this lens not been marketed as an 'L', but rather as 70-300 f4-5.6 IS II. :)

I have a friend who has this and I borrowed it. So far the only problem I can see on this lens is the price.

I agreed but no choice lah...quality comes with a price and moreover, quality brings reliability and better resales. Consider buying a good expensive lens as 'borrowing' it..u won't loose much comapring to renting one for a few years. :)

Anyway, pricy as it is..but after using it for awhile..I feel every cents is worth it.

Every time after watching their 'videos' either on a product launch or so call "evaluation" ..really I dunno what they are actually trying to tell the audiences. Its always "open verdict" and iszit it "recommended"..most of the time, nobody knows. I find them very "uncommitted" in product recommendation wise.

Not sure how they come to such a conclusion of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L USM IS..but I do fun them very entertaining especially when I'm bored. :bsmilie:
