The most amusing thing is when a moderator comments, "speaking as a member not as a moderator". Its like a fireman saying ohh I off-duty so I not fireman. If you are a moderator, you are expected to be one at all times regardless of which forum you are in charge of. If you feel the burden then don be a moderator.

I agree that being moderators are thankless and often you get flak from the members but if you are not happy, just quit. Similarly if the members are not happy about the place, just voice their concerns, evaluate the responses and quit if you like. Better yet, start your own blogs/forums and run things the way you feel it should be run. The power of the Internet is in the projection of the indiviaul voice.

Get out of your comfort zone.
I do not find it amusing at all. I fine is totally acceptable and correct a thing to do. As a moderator, it is not so proper to express a minor personal opinion about how a person title his thread, etc. His name carry a title - moderator, and he has a job function to perform.

However, he can and is free to express his personal views. It just reflect how responsible, sensitive and carefull in positioning his views. You can attack his views or deride it - he is open to receive it as another member person. But you cannot comment that he is a moderator with small squinty eyes, majoring in the minor.

I find it rather crass to ask someone doing a good job to quit. Or assume that he cannot take flak. Or that he is not comfortable. Similarly, just because I see things differently from you, I do not form an opinion that you are empty vessel. Correct me if I am wrong.

Let's just cut the talk and take up Jason's suggestion.

Wow, this is quite amazing!

But herein lies the problem as I pointed out earlier - which is the "humanness" that afflict all of us. We all perceive things differently, modified by our education, experiences, maturity etc

Following this line of reasoning, and going along Sulhan's arguments, God actually is more fair. In fact God plays by the rules, but moderators go beyond the rules.

And therefore beyond God.

Perception and assumption... Thats where all our problems come from.

Lets go with Jason's suggestion. New mods can definately bring a breath of fresh air to the putrid room...

I vote for Student and DP. :D

There are good _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and there are bad _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. Can't avoid it.

Anyway, just be reminded. The Admins paid for the bandwidth and the hardware and the BB software too. They have a right to do anything they want. Mods act under the instructions of the Admins, so at any time anything happens, it's all pre laid down R&R.

Somebody mentioned this is like somebody's house, so let's not **** in other people's house k? Cheer up, move on. Start new threads. Comment on more pics or just shoot more.

Anyway, I'll vote to close off Kopitiam permanently. However, if it remains open, I'll vote for XXX Boy, Spectrum, to be the moderator for kopitiam.

Firstly, to all the members who have posted in here, thank you for your honest feedback, criticisms and also the shows of support.

As far as possible, we try to provide explanation of why the thread/post was closed or removed (in most cases, we send a PM to the threadowner), but we may not be able to provide a lengthy explanation all the time as we are also all working in full-time jobs.

We fully realise that we cannot please everyone all the time (as I have said many times before) but we always try to do the correct things as far as the majority of members are concerned and we are content if we can please most of the members most of the time.

Free speech (and in particular, the Kopitiam section) is a very weird beast. There are arguments for and against free speech and its always very difficult to draw a line between whats acceptable and whats not. The Kopitiam in ClubSNAP has been traditionally a very hard forum to moderate precisely because of the grayness of that line and we have seen many occasions where Moderators actions have been called into question relating to posts in the Kopitiam section.

Back to the question of "Mods (and by extension, the Admins) playing God" and with particular reference to the Kopitiam section, we hereby extend an invitation to those that feel that they can contribute as Moderators in Kopitiam as "Keepers of Free Speech".

Here is a proposal and some guidelines that will apply to newly appointed Moderators of Kopitiam (if anyone decides to take up the mantle):-

a) All current Moderators of Kopitiam will be reassigned to other subforums.
b) Kopitiam section will be closed until New Moderator(s)are appointed
c) New Moderator(s) will be solely responsible for activities within the Kopitiam section
d) New Moderatos(s) will set the guidelines for posts and threads in Kopitiam section (subject to final ratification by Admins)
e) If there are any complaints or issues relating to New Moderator(s) actions in Kopitiam, and if the New Moderator(s) are unable to resolve the issues in a satisfactory manner, the New Moderator(s) will be removed and we will start again at Step B.

How does that proposal sound? If anyone is interested in becoming a Moderator for the Kopitiam section, please step forward and we will evaluate and appoint as necessary.

PS : This is a sincere invitation and I really hope those who believe they can help to make CS a better place to step up and volunteer their time and service.

Really appreciate your offer. IMHO the mods/admins of CS have done a great job - so there is no need to extend such an offer

In fact doing this will not solve anything and will create a bigger mess - simply because you cannot please everyone. It's not possible to pander to everyone's whim and fancy.

In this particular case, I find the thread starter's title rather appalling. I support the decisions to close the threads as and when the mods feel it is justified to do so. After all, this is a free forum. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Even the government which is answerable to the tax paying people and their votes, makes decisions that are firm and irrevocable

It may be amusing to you, but certainly not to me. Moderators are also members, just like you and the rest. Many a times, when we voiced our views on certain subjects, we are being labelled as authoritarian, exercising our absolute rights, etc. Likewise, for your example, "if there is a real fire, since I am not a fireman, I will let the fireman put out the fire." mentality

Think it might be a good idea to go with Jason idea of closing the Kopitiam. It did provide me with many fun and laughter.

Due to the large member base, control will be more difficult now. Closing it will bring the forum back to what it is started for - Photography.

Why do you find my thread title appalling? I am only playing on the original moderator's own words, which I quote, "The moderators' job is not to play god, but to moderate the forum according to the terms and conditions set for CS."

That said, still do not understand why you think the title is appalling? I will probably never understand, but nonetheless, your opinion is welcome.

When I first saw this discussion yesterday, I wanted to refrain from posting as a +1 kind of thing and adding little value to the discussion.

However, on second thoughts, it is important for me to post my views here.

ClubSnap in my experiences is one of the best moderated photography forum around - the moderators seldom impose their views but rather share their experiences. No demi-gods here as far as I can see :D :D . You cannot have a "free for all" forum as, if you look at some of the forums around, it invariably gets nowhere as the experienced and long time photographers just drop off and stop posting. A lot would be lost if these members were to stop visiting the forum and share.

If you have a close look at top forums like Rob Galbraith (RG) or Fred Miranda, over the last few months both these forums were exceptionally firm to keep the flow on track. Please do a search on either or both forums and you will understand why firm moderation was needed. And at RG, posts get deleted if they are not within acceptable forum conduct/rules.

I would think some of the comments posted are so funny and totally unfair to the moderators. Rather we should be grateful for the moderators for providing all of us with a photography community so that we can continue to learn from each other.

This is a once and final WARNING for SZEKIAT,

you dont use word like "chicken out" on me.

The previous issue has been undertaken "privately". The offer of reward has been settled. Jus so happen YOU, SZE KIAT did not get the $1000/- rewards.

You want to know how long does does it take to go through all the court procedure?

You better make sure YOU, SZE KIAT, apologise before I get really pist off with you.

Besides, why do you take the opportunity words insult using "chicken out"??

I'm not sure about any legal terms "pist" but I don't think it's in the Oxford dictionary. The closest term is piste n. A ski trail densely packed with snow.

Did you mean "pissed"?

OT:

Q: What did the rooster say to the hen when she exited the coop?
A: Chicken out!

Oh ya...

+1 first, this one confirmed liao...

.

Now here's a good example. I suppose we can delete the last 4 messages?
(Together, perhaps, with a 400 word explanation?)

This is the time where the mods need to take a tougher stand. Close the thread!

In many forums, personal attacks commited by members are warned. Dun learn lesson, they're banned. I think the rules are a bit slack in this area. AND, MODs have the power to warn and ban members.

All you guys need is to give and take. Cut some slack each way and CS will be a happier place.
