The hunt for Red October....which Leica lens produce the "Leica glow"?

4194685935_f452d518c9.jpg

Shot with 75mm Summilux @ f1.4
Notice something special about this lens. Under some back light condition, there is a light glow around the image edges. Is that the Leica glow?

How about other Leica lens?

:)

50mm Summilux pre-ASPH (E46) wide open @ f1.4

Under 100% crop of this image, there is a layer of light glow on the edge from 75mm Summilux wide open @ f1.4
Some may find this as "glow", to some it is "softness" as the edges are not well defined.

Thank you for your kind words... dankwan, I like your chrome color shots too... you know how to use light to the effect...

Come back to the point of this thread...do share some shots that you have taken and think it produce the so call "Leica glow" or whatever you find it produce "special effect" to the subject in focus...

Thanks, bro!

:)

Some call it "Leica glow" (or "Nikon glow", depending on which camp), but is nothing more than a little flare in the highlights :bsmilie:

AH, The Glow!

Is this little flare in the highlight really the "Leica glow"? Is there such a thing? Or just a name one gave it to a photographer with a marvelous shot? :bsmilie:

hookonclassic, you live up to your nick. Very nice and classic pics. :)

Photo.net had a long thread on LEICA GLOW. Interesting read.

There is nothing new under the sun, so it seems.

Thanks hookonclassic for the kind words, will post some shots up soon as it is an interesting thread and a great chance to create a leica lens repository.

I suppose that's my point, glow/softness is used for effect in the overall composition and in a sense, nicely composed shots like yours, black and white, diffuse light, nostalgic background up to and including the choice of typeface make the "shot" and this softness/glow really doesn't matter.

I dont think the shot would be as effective if you had used the Lux 50 asph or even the Cron 50.

I agree with Cocoa in the sense that glow can be recreated with any lens (luminous landscape article), and flare/softness/glow is inherent in highlights. The famed sonnar glow if not controlled as in composition and subject, including pp, can ruin the "shot", tunring glow into flare.

Clinical sharpness has its own beauty I suppose, and perhaps that is why the raging debate between camps on the pre asph or the asph.

Aiya! I dont know if I am making sense sometimes.....will post some up soon.

Thanks for the link on some definition of "Leica glow" as defined by some others.

So... there is such thing call "Leica glow" (no offense to other brand users) defined as "little flare on the highlight" or something else that only the photo can illustrate. Lets agree on the definition of this term. Second, some debate as whether it is generated by the lens used or due to some lighting effect or conditions or due to both..etc...

1) Since we are in RF thread, so my question is which RF lenses they have used that produce such "enhanced characteristic".

2) It will be interesting to see "Leica glow" sample picture from various interested CS users in this thread to show case their interpretation of this so call "glow".

Have fun..

:)

sounds interesting..

GLOW!
Technically, maybe 'softness' but they glow cos aberrations are not well corrected in these older lenses. The new Asph has no 'glow'.

The 35 Lux pre-ASPH does have a unique glow/flare signature wide open. To see this effect clearly, I attach two images below. Sorry for the huge image size, and again apology for not shooting with a Leica :)

Glow? Flare on highlight? you be the judge.

Aiya, it's like salt, season to taste.

Agree... different effect for different situation...this lens "glow" may be put to good use in some situation... but in some case they may want to avoid... thanks for sharing your thought.
