Funny, people fork out money for FF camera's like there is no tomorrow but getting a decent Planar Rollei is all of a sudden a large investment ... I would say between 800 and 4500 US, depending on what you are looking for. I own a GX that cost me 1800 US, still much cheaper then a Canon Mark whatever.

Sorry, the most investment i made is my 2nd hand rolleicord at ~US$150 inclusive of shipping. it has a slightly jammed shutter, think due sticking shutter, hence after a few firings, everything works like charm

Please dont get offended by my words, am poor in my england, hence, u may get offended by my style of writing.

am just voicing out the fact tht a gd working rolleiflex with planar lens does cost an arm & leg for a layman blue collared sallaried man :)

anyone know how to scan film negatives? I found those professional shops (fotohub) charges quite steep for just scanning a roll of film :(

You can have it scanned by a 3rd party if you are extremely busy and have lots of negatives to scan.

For me, I'm doing it as a hobby, and I do not need to rush for deadlines. So, I got myself a low-cost scanner (Canon 8800F) and did it myself when I am free. The other advantage is that I can re-scan if I don't like it and change the settings until I find one that I like.

Oh yes, and I develop the negatives only to save cost. If after scanning, I like what I see on the screen, I will send it for enlargement. Usually, I have only 1-2 pictures I really like in 1 to 2 rolls of 16s.

Another way is to ask your friend with a scanner to do it for you - it will only cost you the price of a cup of coffee... :)

Price & performance = get a Holga to start out, even if you get one with plastic lens you won't regret it. Learning how and when to expose with the Holga is challenging given its shutter/aperture limitations, but the cam is so user friendly and modifiable you will love it.
Can mod for more apertures, remote release, pinhole, the list goes on and on.
Plenty of web resources to give inspiration... Ahhh the plastic...

A TLR will give you more control and consistency over the shots.

Either one of these is a good start into MF which, if you get the bug, you will upgrade soon. The Holga will stay with you though!

Try searching the web for Mamiya Rangefinder 6 or 7 or 7ii 6x7 cameras.
It's MF and light, not the best, but damn close. The 6th series has better camera quality, but the 7th has the 43mm lens (equivalent to 21mm in 35mm). The 6th's widest lens is 50mm i think.

Yeah the Mamiya 6 is a great camera, I use it to shoot landscapes.

Another advantage of the 6 over the 7 is that it has a retractable lens. Once retracted it's so compact it's smaller than my D3 without a lens on. That's about as compact as you can get (short of maybe the Bessa 6x7, but that's a fixed lens).

It's a little difficult to find though, but if you find a working copy (with all the 3 lenses) and it's at a decent price, don't think twice.

May I know how much did you pay for the Canon scanner?

May I ask ya a stoopid question? Can I just use normal scanner? but how to "process" the negative into colorful pics? I dont know how to put it into words ... sorry. Hope you get what i meant.

Thx alot :)

I paid $309 for the scanner at Funan. Maybe you can try and see if they have special price at Comex.

I have not used a normal scanner to scan film before - so I cannot advise you.

The software that comes with the scanner will automatically convert the color negatives into positives. You can then adjust the image using Photoshop/Lightroom.

Cheers!

Hi there, i got my 8800f from SLS as the prices quoted to me at funan were outrageous 2 mths back. You can proceed directly to the fifth floor at SLS, i think, and head on to this shop directly in front of escalator. I got my 8800f at 295 sing, with 15 mths canon warranty. :) Its a great scanner for the money, really worth it imo, esp if you scan 120mm slides, good stuff.

I use the 8800F too. Make sure the negs are real flat. Best results I get is scan directly from the glass plate.
