Testing the Nikon V1

Did some more tests out of curiosity...

Using the 10.5mm DX fisheye...

Nikon D7000, ISO 400, f2.8, 1/50 sec, EV -0.7:

And the Nikon V1 + FT1, ISO 640, f2.8, 1/30 sec, EV +0:

Lens became MF only... distortion still pronounced but much less than on the D7000. But to me... what the heck, if distort, then go all the way. Sharpness is about the same. Noise in the V1 shot (@ ISO 640) quite visible.

Next using the 50mm f1.4G:

D7000, ISO 800, f1.4, 1/50sec, EV -0.7:

Next, on the V1 + FT1, ISO 560, f1.4, 1/30sec, EV +0:

Bokeh ball for the D7000 is an oval, while that for the V1 is "chopped". Sharpness and noise about the same.

Here's a wider shot on the V1 + FT1, ISO 450, f1.4, 1/30sec, EV +0 showing the "chopped" bokeh balls:

Waiting for the next full moon :) Akan datang... I also interested to know.

They say full moon is not too nice to shoot. All flat. You should shoot when not full moon so there is some shadows and the craters can be seen more clearly.

J1 with 500mm + 2xTC. No crop.....

Swee ah!

How does it compare to a DX with 500mm and 2x TC cropped to the same size?

on DX camera, image is very very soft on the 2x TC.... in fact, with the 2x TC, image from both DX and FX are way too soft for me.

By the way, both my friends and I tried on J1/V1, the focusing would hunt a lot on low lightings.

OK... but what if you don't use the TC, just the 500mm then crop to the same size. Do you get the same details?

Have not tried that....

A big Dose of Poison.

J1 with 500mm + 2xTC. Setting 1/30s f/13.0 ISO200. After some PP.

One more question: do you get AF with the 2x TC on? Coz with the Kenko TCs I lose AF :(

More test (before the rain comes) using my newly acquired 55-300mm. All shots use AF-S. Focus hunts quite a bit and is slow. Oh well... compromises, compromises...

Peaceful dove, ISO-220, f5.6, 1/250 sec, EV +0, effective focal distance 810mm, no PP, JPEG straight from cam:

Grey heron, ISO-360, f5.6, 1/250 sec, EV -0.3, effective focal distance 810mm, no PP, JPEG straight from cam:

The lightest 800mm combo with AF and VR... can walk around and hunt for birds instead of sit and wait... so can't really complain.

Other than super zoom compact. Want to see the IQ on the Nikon P710... And it's awesome 1000mm zoom.

According to most folks on DPReview, the Sigma 150-500 OS HSM is a no go for the V1 + FT1. I too was disappointed when I tried out my copy of the Siggy on the FT1. But I just got it to work! WOOHOO!

The bad news: MF only and OS no longer work.

Here is what it looks like with the Kenko 1.4x and 2x TC slapped on:
