[ Techtips ] How to check shutter count on G1

hi guys found this on dpreview 4/3s forums. it requires dexterous hands to perform, but it does work.

pressing this combination of keys will allow you to check the shutter count (SHTCNT), the power on PWRCNT, and an unknown variable STBCNT which has been thought either to mean standby count, or strobe flash count. also displays your firmware version.

1. Switch off camera
2. Switch to Single Shot Mode
3. Press "Film Mode" and "Display" together, hold these
4. Switch on camera, release the buttons after a short while.
5. Press "Menu/Set" and "left arrow" together, hold them, ignore the display
6. In addition(!) press 2 times "Film Mode"

Aperture and DoF Question between m4/3 and aps-c

am i correct to understand that using a m4/3 or 4/3 camera, the DoF will be deeper (less background blur or the 3D pop out effect) due to the smaller sensor, meaning that the DoF of aperture f2.8 on an m4/3 will look like the DoF of f5.6 on an APS-C? roughly like that lah, no need so accurate calculation.

that's all the difference rite? at the same aperture, the DoF will be deeper for m4/3 cameras compared to APS-C.

what about light? as in will a f2.8 aperture 4/3 lens allow the same amount of light as an f2/8 APS-C lens?

so if i set my G1 at iso 200, f3.5, shutter 1/60, the exposure (brightness) of my picture will be the same for an APS-C camera using the same settings? all things being equal lah like assuming lighting conditions never change.

i'm asking this because i've realised that indoors, i have to shoot at f3.5 (kit lens) and iso 400-800, and my shutter speed still falls below 1/60 (which is the recommended to reduce shake right?)

was wondering if its a characteristic of m4/3s, where due to sensor size or anything else, it causes less light to come in or something like that.

am i making sense? haha. sorry if my post is too convoluted.

How to set E-P1 White Balance manually?

I am recommended to join this forum for 4/3 system. It is an interesting place to find answers. However I have question how to set white balance with E-P 1 manually.

Press the one WB button on white piece of paper is good enough? How to make the camera remember for the same lighting shooting? When moving to different lighting how to set white blalance again or anyway to remember multiple White balances set by myself? Have I expected too much on this camera?

Which filter should I get?

I'm thinking of getting either UV or CPL filter.
Which one is a must to get?

- - -

neither. there is 'no-must' get item.

i suggest you read up on the purpose, use and impact of the filters before spending money.

its usually faster to get answers by typing your question on google or any good search engine than wait for replies on a forum.

e.g. searching for 'use of filters in photography' generated this...http://www.google.com.sg/search?hl=e...use+of+filters

the newbies sub-forum and general sub-forum has alot of useful information there made available. good to check out there 1st.

Olympus Camera Tested in Extreme Condition

Hi all fellow oly fans,

With some of the recent posts about the perceived death of a wonderful system, it can be disheartening to the community. Thus, I hope this thread will bring some cheers among us.

Just to share a website which shows how a photographer use his oly cam and his collection of very beautiful and memorable images of nature.

And if you are moved by his passion, you may even consider joining him on a expedition to experience (in my humble opinion) one of the best trip of a lifetime :>

PS: Maybe we should just be like him...just go and capture as much as possible of the things that we treasure...those precious moments may be lost forever even before we hear the final word from the system builder
