Thaipusam (Day of Thanksgiving)

Source: http://www.heb.gov.sg/mainhindufestivals.html#thaipusam

Thaipusam falls on the 8th of February this year..which is next Sunday.
I have been shooting this event for the last 2 years, its very eventful.
This year Thaipusam falls on a Sunday, so no need to take leave. :D
As it will be very crowded, hence I will not be organizing as an outing.
Hopefully can see some of TSers there. :)

Share some photos I took last year.

Buttie, I'll see you there! :bsmilie:
Been wanting to shoot last year but couldn't make it!
Btw, since it's a whole day event, what time will you be there? I think it's a 4km route, so can walk along with the procession, right?

4KM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????:o:sweat:

4KM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????:o:sweat:

imagine... they carry kavadi and walk.. then you have a bunch of b&w t-shirts folks carry heavy gear + tripod and walk along... i guess if you can last that 4 km.... your wishes will come true... :bsmilie:

Yup, the devotees will be carrying their kavadis for a 4km trek from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
The kavadi itself can weigh close to 15 kg!

So yes, it's not a location based event. It's a trek.
(Hopefully I got this right!)

last year's route...

which I think should be around the same this year..

Selegie Road or Penang Road is a good location to wait... a couple of interesting stuff to shoot beside the kavadi... cracking coconut along the way, the chariots...

Yes Feb! U are right about the 4km walk from temple to temple..previous years I only took half day leave and start shooting around 3pm till night around 10pm..i started from the temple at little india and follow the procession towards Tank Road..along the way there are pauses and traffic hold-ups..it is then the kavadi carrier's relatives and friends will start playing drums and cheering for them..the atmosphere is awesome!

this year I'm trying something different..I will reach there slightly before day break ~3am..to shoot the preparation..the devotees will start preparations the night before though..difference between day and nite is tat some devotees carry kavadis with lights mounted during the night.

1 tip to share: bring plastic bag and wear slippers..so when u enter the temples, put ur slippers in the plastic bag and carry with you. Strictly no shoes within the temples.

Good suggestion... its eaither that or barefoot...
