Thank you DM for sharing some great tips on food photpgraphy.

Tried CLS with 3 flashes this morning and failed miserably (I guess I'm not a flasher? haha!). So, I fell back to my comfort zone: natural lighting.

What do you think?

I like the first one better... focal point is more naturally in the middle..

keep experimenting... you will hit the jackpot on CLS :P

Haha! Thanks :bsmilie:
Frustrating to balance the 3 lights ..

U may want to learn a few tricks from our Master Dream Merchant. Master on food photography. ;)

Hi all butties..

Mega Mac set meal at $7.75.. add $1.50 for red bean pie.. ooooo *slurpz...;p

Great and healthy meal..i want

Yeah! It's brown rice with pumpkin!

lovely... very appetizing... natural light or CLS???

Thank you!
It was natural light. I gave up on CLS after trying for an hour .. hahaha!
Will need to train more and probably do more research to build my knowledge.

Oh Hai Butties!

GREAT SHOTS FEB!

Feb, a little nugget of info

When you introduce ONE flash, you make your job at least THREE TIMES more complicated/difficult. When you introduce THREE Flash units, you make your job ... ?

Not saying you can't shoot food with speedlights, but because you do not have modelling lights, which means you can't assess where light is falling, it's intensities and ratios (in real life) and light spread, plus unless you work with very specific light modifiers, you're essentiall working almost totally BLIND and with little or entirely no control over the light when you try to shoot something as complicated as food with speedlights and a basic diffuser or reflector.

Ask the guys who went the two rounds at Sinful Melvados how difficult it was shooting food with speedlights.

Also, it takes a good foundational understanding of light, to be able to control it. Again, not saying you don't understand the fundamentals of light, given the high level of your work, but still, it's not a topic that most photographers understand even though it's one of the most crucial to all forms of conventional photography.

Thanks, DM! I felt so much better! :bsmilie:
Thought I was an idiot for not having the shadows managed well with CLS .. hahaha!
I only read the basics of using CLS so will need to get more thorough with the exact science of it. I can foresee it's not as easy as learning how to mask with CS3 ...
One important fact that I learnt from you: start with 1 speedlight then counter the shadow with the second one. Metering .. must learn ..

For yesterday's frolic into CLS .. I prolly should've used a bigger diffuser since my 'model' was bigger than the diffuser .. the light escaped to ruin the composition like nobody's business .. haha!

All in all, it's quite a frustrating first experience with CLS, I hope I'll do better next time. Thanks for the advice :bsmilie:
(it's so tempting to fall back to my comfort zone: natural lighting .. kekeke!)
