Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD

Just got mine from AP at SLS. $660 cash (including GST). Was $707 a few days ago.

Something to ask about the VC. Was testing it in the shop. It feels very different from Canon's IS. Canon, when the IS is active, you can see the movements even out. The vibrations are "slowed down" or damped. Tamron's VC feels sorta "sticky". The focus would stay at a point and then hops to another point nearby as you move the lens slightly. Between the points, the focus would be almost solidly fixed and free from minor vibrations. This effect is more apparent at 300mm compared to at 70mm end. I can see the pros and possible cons for such design but is this behavior actually normal for those who also had this lens??? Hope I haven't got a dud.

Yea tried this lens today at Cathay. The lens VC's behaviour is just as what was described. Kinda distracting though.

Anyway, the lens seems extremely soft at 300mm. The Canon 70-300 IS USM (non L) seemed sharper than the newer Tamron. Is it supposed to be?

Thanks for the VC behavior confirmation. Haven't had chance to try outdoors. There's only so much you can do testing inside the shop, esp at f/5.6. Hope to try to do so soon. I have seen some sharp samples wide open at the long end online (Nikon users were raving about their version); hopefully same goes for mine.

I have to say that USD so far seems to feel slower compared to USM drives. It takes more iterations/longer to lock on focus. Whether it is actually significant in actual use remains to be tried out.

I agree with you. It seemed as slower than the canon's older version 70-300 IS USM.

The person at Cathay even recommended me not to take the Tamron, as resale is bad and optics not as good as Canon's. I've yet to try another copy of the Tamron 70-300 to achieve a conclusive result, probably the copy i tried was a bad one.

actually my first impression of this lens is, i felt that the USD isnt that fast afterall. comparing to my USM lenses, the tamron is a tad slower.

hmmmm when the reviews first came out and the canon samples were not yet available in Singapore, everyone was excited about the lower price point, USD which wld point to fast focusing and good image quality...but now that the canon samples are out in the wild in Singapore, seems that less ppl are talking about it...

i tink if USD is just a little slower then USM, it is still ok given the 1K price diff between the Tamron and the Canon L 70-300, but it the Tamron really that soft at 300mm?

I am a little confuse with the results... are we comparing this lens with the canon 70-300 non L or the 70-300L??:dunno:

To me, I feel that...
1. The Tamron loses to the Canon 70-300 (non L) at 300mm. ( And prob the copy i tried was flawed.)
2. The Canon(non L) loses to the Canon (L) for contrast and image quality. Also the focusing ring does turn which makes it kinda troublesome.

The L has highest built quality. However the Tamron is the cheapest.
