sorry to ot abit , can this lens do potrait and macro shoot ?? i'm sorry this is a noob question...thanx.....and can i ask which is better for potrait and macro shoot ? for e.g this tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or prime lenses like 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.7 ??? planning to get one soon.....

Yes it can do portrait if you're not too fussy... even the kit lens can do portrait... usually people use prime lens (i.e. non-zoom lenses) like the 85 f/1.4 or the 135 f/2.8, etc as they are sharper than zoom lenses and due to the very large apertures (those f-numbers), they allow you to defocus the background so much that only the subject is in focus and therefore will capture the attention of the viewer... and also these lenses tend to have circular aperture blades which allow for creamy smooth bokeh... ie. the blurred defocussed background is a smooth blur from light to darkness without sharp transitions... bokeh is a Japanese term which has no real meaning as a Japanese word (AFAIK) but it refers to this desirable smooth defocused background effect... the 50mm f/1.7 & 1/4 are general purpose lenses... they too can be used as portrait lenses... in fact on a 1.5x cropped camera (like the A200-700), their focal length is about right (75mm field of view) for portraiture work...
