Yep agree though the picture can definitely be sharper but at f2.8 it is probably like this. Not tack sharp but useable image.

Anyway, can anyone tell me where do you usually focus when taking landscapes? Nearest object or point it at infinity?

Ok let me try to help. Normally for me, i will not point to any nearest object or point to infinity.

What i do is to find a large object with colour in between the darkest colour and the lightest colour found in the landscape. This is to prevent overexposure in the sky or underexposure in the vegetations resulting in loss of details. For example in the photo, the focus is ard the green vegetation behind the houses in the centre of the photo.

F-stop used will normally be 10-11. Because i feel that at these F-stops, it produces the sharpest image. I have also tried F-stops 15, 18, 25 and 32 but the results were not very good.

Of course different people might have different ways in taking landscape. The best is to experiment different method and find the best way to produce image that u will be satisfied in.

Hope it helps.

I think the pix is ok. f2.8 man at wide angle some more. IMHO, in the digital age, where ppl can just zoom in on their image on the LCD, we tend to see very clearly whether it's sharp or not. In the past (film days), you print on your 3R or 4R, and may not have consider the picture above not sharp enough.

Anyways, I think the 17-50mm is not too bad for its price?

Ancient...... we use the lightbox and a loupe to scrutinise slides. Not as convenient but I guess it was the closest thing to pixel peeping.

Using program mode and used my camera bag as a 'stand' :P

seems like its nt a good way to test =x

Well a better way is to try putting it on the table and shoot small objects... Try some f2.8 bokehs :)

There are not many lenses who produce tack sharp images at f/2.8 - and they are not budget lenses like the Tamron 17-50. So you need to adjust your expectations a bit.

Check the meaning and usage of "Hyperfocal Distance" as mentioned by goldfish. Depending on your focal length and used aperture you will get a certain distance value. You can then either focus on some objects in that range (using focus lock function) and recompose or you can set your lens to manual focus and use the distance scale (if available) - especially if you get metering problems using focus lock.
