Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC. WOW

It's good to use in situations like on holidays:

1) You don't wish to bring tripod along

2) VC allows handheld night shots at f4 and less, at shutter speed of 1/4 or 1/10, at lower ISOs.

3) I don't think it's about the reliance on VC. Even the most stable hands might not be able to do a stable shot at shutter speed of 1/5 at 17mm.

I expect 800+, max 900 or so. It should not hit 1k, since the current one is around 620.

wah the fact that the vc lens is 1.5 times of the non vc lens price is a killer man.


am still new to digital photography, but would like to ask, is it that much more convenient to have vc on this lens? if no vc compared to vc, can handhold at how much slower a shutter speed?

I am planning to purchase the 17-50mm soon, and unless there is some noticeable IQ upgrade or faster AF etc as compared to the non-VC...think I'll just save the money and get the non-VC

The first thing that i’ve noticed is that it has some improvement over the non vc version. The most important is that it is now very sturdy and well built. It feel “dense” and “sturdy”, is very well built and there is no notice of “flimsy”. The second improvement is the focus speed, it’s autofocusing is fast, very fast, more fast than my 18-105 vr which have an HSM motor. Third improvement is the focus “sound”. The old tamron non-vc is very loudy and noisy when focusing. The new is noisy, but the noise is acceptable and is not loudy.


Thus, faster AF, less noise, sturdier body. I would say hold on the money before buying, thats what im doing. Planing to compare both when the VC arrives, then make my decision.

Yup. Will wait and see when the VC arrives. $400 can get me a much needed flash with a little top-up

it's quite interesting about "faster focus" thingy on top of other upgrades in this lens..
it seems that many D90s have AF problem with BIM version of 17-50s..and their AF speed is quite slow..

It all depends how steady you can hold a camera.
Usually, for shorter focal length, VC not really needed. Since, according the rule of 1/focal length, e.g., at 50mm, as long as your shutter speed is faster then 1/50, your photo mostly would be 'immune' from handshake.

So, for Tamron 17-50, as long as you shoot at shutter speed faster then 1/50, is totally fine.
For those train well, usually at 50mm, shutter speed of 1/20 is still ok for them. Some even can go to 1/10.

Slight correction. Actually you'd need 1/80 to have a safe shot without handshake. Crop body. =P

If it's a 3 stop IS (which I don't think is that likely.. perhaps under 3), you can shoot at 1/10-1/20 FAIRLY safely, if you practice proper handhold and breathing techniques

I am using the non VC lens with the D90, so far AF performance is acceptable. It is only a very small fraction slower than the kit lens. It is not that bad for a lens that cost a little over 600. Funny thing is, I got this lens for my D40x. And later sold the D40x and upgraded to the D90. It seems performance on the D40x might be slightly better than on the D90. Just a feeling though, not something I can really 100% confirm.

BTW, pricing in Malaysia is around SGD 800. Should be welcome news for people watching this lens.

couldn't take a chance and got a 28-75 non-BIM from a fren..still no problem with "refuse to AF" symptoms which have been seen quite occasionally with my 18-270..

Your wish is granted. Here are the 100% crop (if I hv done them correctly):dunno: Bear in mind VC or VR is only necessary at high zoom range but it allow me to go to very low SS & minimise effect of any handshakes. I must say the VC is quite noisy compared to VR
