Suspected trader in clubsnap

Some people try to make use of you, but there are some who are really broke, or have an interest in photography but don't have enough funding. So busy flaming these kind of traders or pranksters but forget all about these type of poor people...

Sorry, I beg to differ this viewpoint. I was relatively poor during my college days with limited allowance. While I do not have the luxury like some of my classmates whose parents were able to buy them whatever they wanted, I worked part time giving tuition to earn extra pocket and worked during the school holidays to earn extra income to buy these luxuries. There is no excuse to use 'poor' to bargain for a lower price. If you wanted something that badly, work for it, save up and make your purchase.

Looks like these little tricksters using the account "walking alone" and other accounts have been really up to no good. I've actually met him before to deal once. Here's how it went:

Was looking to upgrade my 60D to a 7D back then, so this guy, "Greg", messages me for a trade for his "personal" 7D + box and accessories with original grip in "mint condition" for my 60D with a top up of $500. So we agree to meet in Tampines on a Sunday (mutual convenience) for the deal after slow replies on his side during Saturday-Sunday (up to 3am in the morning ).

"Greg" even insisted I use my phone to take pics of my 60D at 3am in order to Whatsapp him pictures when I already had pics on my computer. Reason on his side stating he couldn't use the computer at that time. Reluctantly, I dragged myself out of bed at that ungodly hour to unpack my 60D to take pictures for him, only because a straight trade was much faster and easier than selling off my 60D and hunting for a 7D later. I asked for some pics of his 7D, and he showed me some snaps of the front and back which looked alright.

Later in the afternoon, I met "Greg" and his friend at Coffee Bean at Tampines One. Was mildly surprised that the two were most likely only 16 years old, as they were both studying for their O levels. "Greg" seemed friendly and presented his 7D for checking while his friend checked my 60D as "Greg" claimed he was not sure how to check a DSLR.

This was where things got dirty. The "mint" 7D had a major paint chip at the bottom of the camera, a whole chunk of paint gone from the base, exposing the magnesium body, some missing paint off the strap lugs. The live view/video switch seemed rather stiff and the rubber grip was already starting to peel off. The original grip was not even original at all. Was a third party Pixel grip, with no box at all. The original strap was also missing as well. Yet "Greg" said the camera was two years old, won from a lucky draw by his parents, and was only used for personal street photography once in a while.

At least the camera was fine functionally.

In his defence when I questioned him, "Greg" said he didn't know about certain defects eg. rubber grip peeling, and didn't know the grip was not original. He even said he didn't know how he got that large paint chip at the base of the camera. I decided to give him the benefit of doubt and just went through what was wrong with his camera, and suggested he listed his camera as an 8/10 at most upon his request.

After politely turning down the deal, I had a little chat with "Greg" on why he wanted to downgrade to a 60D as I was really suspicious at that time. That's where I found out he was contemplating downgrading to either a 50D and 60D as he felt that the 7D's features were too much for him. That checked out with his buy/sell history on clubsnap back then and he sounded rather sincere and convincing that day so I just wrote it off as innocent misrepresentation on his side given his age. Bid him and his friend farewell and left.

Thanks to him, however, I lost two potential buyers, one who replied slightly later than Greg, and another who replied even later. One got his 60D, the other one went AWOL. Eventually sold off my 60D to a nice videographer and later bought my 7D just in time for my next event. :)

I suspect that "Greg's" friend is the other HP number in the ads as he seemed to know his stuff when checking my camera. Perhaps he's that "Simon" we keep seeing time again and again, account after account. Probably started using "Greg's" account after all his accounts got banned. Such a shame those 2 young tricksters are still out and about. "Greg" really seemed like a nice decent guy, if that is even his real name. Kids these days... *sigh*

I agree with this.

Already got so much dirt on him, Yet he's not giving up. So resilient.

good and bad that others cannot reply on thread in BNS.

bad is that people cannot warn others about the sale.

If the person obviously uses multiple accounts then highlight to the mods for deleting them all.

We really have a very vigilant bunch of CSIs here. Keep up the good work.

Yup, have similar experience selling stuff here. That's why I don't even bother to reply when it doesn't meet my RP. At most I keep my gears (I'm looking to buy a dry cabinet cos too many stuff :) )

I almost contacted him about the 60D. Thanks for the highlight.

Oh this Mike. DO NOT DEAL WITH HIM. His stuff is very likely to have problems and he have quirky ways to conceal them.

He has this 24-70L way back, it's infested with dust and fungus but he used glue to glue a filter to the lens so that the buyer could not check clearly. He tells you that he tighten it too much but can be removed with filter spanner or go to CSC.

I was not experienced last time when I started learning photography, and he priced it rather cheap so I was attracted. Exterior and other things doesn't seem to have problem and it is according to his description and I unknowingly took the bait.

Until I went to CSC, they told me the filter was glued. ;(

From then onwards, I have been extremely careful to the extremes when I deal at BnS. Those whom sold to me before will definitely know how I grilled them before the meet up and tested the item before paying :bsmilie:

Once bitten twice shy. I learnt my lesson well enough.

Phew. In the past almost bought a lens from him.

Yes. This is really damn f***ed up, the CSC guys were also literally WTF mode also.

It was so bad that CSC advised me that they had to break the filter glass and pry the filter frame away. It resulted in the filter thread sleeve being damaged and it has to be replaced. Luckily they have the stock and able to do it for me within 1hr on a Saturday.

The fungus grew on one of the tricky element group that CSC will not service. I learnt from bro fatigue that these elements are not easy to clean, the lens had to be fully opened up and the lens element group removed, dismantled and cleaned, joint back and assemble. He says that sometimes service centers may not have the tools, expertise or the necessary dust-free factory environment to proceed with such jobs and they will usually recommend the replacement of the entire group which will be freaking expensive.

I ended up paying for the filter thread sleeve replacement cost and had to sell the lens later at a lower price due to fungus. Luckily there is a guy who doesn't mind the declared issues and off loaded it from me. Expensive lessons.

Phew. In the past almost bought a lens from him.

Good for you :)

the usual adage applies - if it is too good to be true, or even if something looks remotely fishy, walk away.

but gluing filter? this one winz.... i have not seen such antics in my years as a mod for buy/sell... :faint:

Honestly, this one is quite a clever trap. The lens itself doesn't seem to have a problem. Pricing is attractive, within the usual BnS range but at the lower end, not those dirt cheap that would sound an alarm.

Now to me, if the lens came with filter, I will remove it. If the lens is gaffer taped, I'll not consider it unless seller willing to remove the gaffer and ensure that the item after gaffer removal do not have adhesive residue.

If someone could glue a filter to conceal a flaw, I don't see why the same a$$holes couldn't use gaffer tapes to conceal something. These days.. these crooks can really come out with interesting stuff :bsmilie:
