With GST? If not its $8.4k .. Grey set are ok... I have a few of them, save some bucks and very reliable and good quality!

Should be gst included in the price. No harm giving them a call to enquire. You can speak to Michael.

If you are okay with grey sets... then you should check out technogadget.

Canon Lenses - Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM - Techno Gadgets - Your Reliable Source of Photo Equipments

300mm f2.8L IS USM is selling at S$7409 inc GST (note that this is not the second version). Which is an excellent price.

Oh and since you are okay with 300mm range... then you should also check out the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS.

In my opinion, the image quality was very good indeed... and it was more versatile than the prime lens.

Third Party Lenses - Sigma - Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM - Canon Mount - Techno Gadgets - Your Reliable Source of Photo Equipments

the older version is selling at S$3529... although there is a newer one out there (not sure if it is selling yet in Singapore) selling at US$3599 from B&H Photo.

Did u see the prices at here? Canon 300mm $9k+, local shop only at $8.4k...

And it's grey set? I wonder who buys from them?

This looks interesting with the 2.8 option.. I do have a sigma lens but do notice that for AF speed, it tends to be slower.. I have also considered the Sigma 150-500 which is versatile but lacks the aperture for speed..

U could try this lens up in some of the bigger shops like Cathay Photo to see if you like their AF speed, but I saw people using it for football matches, sports and stuff like that so... the AF speed is not going to be too slow :)

Thanks for the info... In good daylight there will not be any issue... its always during cloudy, night etc... that's when the AF shows its performance. Btw did see the Techno gadgets selling the Mk1 of Canon 300mm f2.8L. Did you bought anything from them before? They are an online store I suppose and shipping within Singapore is free or inclusive of the price stated?

To say the truth... personally I have not bought anything from them. But I know quite a few people had got their products from them, pretty alright services. They are based in Singapore and delivery in Singapore is free. All price stated is inclusive of GST too.

Oh... and for AF speed, you must go to shop to test. For Cathay Photo, perninsula Singapore is not particularly bright outside the shop. So if you train your lens to point outside, I think you would get a better idea of how good the lens AF in dimmer lighting (of course that is not very scientific though).

Thanks for your advise! And definitely now I got a new lobang for cheaper lens! ... will check out the prices at Techno gadgets!

Hi All,
Was thinking to reach longer on my focal length for wildlife, sports etc. Namely will look at range of above 400mm focal length.
I have a 2x teleconverter and are reviewing the following more affordable lenses to increase the reach.

Any comments or experience with the following combination below will be helpful

1) Canon EF100-400 - versatile zoom and by itself can add as a good 100-400 coverage
2) Canon EF400 f4L - cheapest among all, the reach is there with 2x but no IS
3) Canon EF300 f4L IS - IS, but reach slightly lesser than the 2 above
4) Sigma 150-500mm OS - have considered this seriously but however not sure if Canon 2x teleconverter can be plug into this lens

I am coming into this thread a little late, but I also had to make a similar decision a few years ago. It was a tough decision but I finally decided to get the Canon 100-400.

All of the lenses you are considering was up for grabs for me also excepting the 300mm. I also considered the Sigma 120-400 and Sigma 50-500. After testing each of the lenses, I found them to be fairly close with the advantage going to the Canon 100-400. Each had their pluses and minuses but the Canon seemed to provide the best over-all IQ. I eliminated the 400 prime early in the game because I wanted the advantages and versatility of a zoom.

Later my testing was confirmed by the following website:

Super Tele Photo Test

I use a Tamron 70-300mm VC USD, if you are going for budget, that must be the most budget! :)

I used it once.. It's a pretty good lens if you don't need f/2.8. AF is fast and accurate, at least in daylight.

I got a few quotes for new at ard $8.4k plus.. Do u have any idea of better price?
Did consider sigma version before but frankly no OS can be difficult at times

hi bro,

i am not sure about brand new prices as i buy all my lenses second hand. but do walk around peninsular plaza and you can see a few good condition second hand copies there. i think there are like 2-3 bros selling their copies on B&S here.

good luck!

Found a new interesting lens

SIGMA 120-300mm f2.8 OS

This is much cheaper compared to the Canon 300mm f2.8, added the versatility of zoom function and usable with Canon TC. IQ is quite comparable, of course do expect AF to suffer in terms of speed and response.. if using 1DX or 5D3..

Other than that, its a good alternative as its 2.8!! Shot recently at the Lion City Cup, tried the 300mm f2.8, good quality, IQ and AF speed of course but prime is prime after all and frankly I spend time cropping later bcos frankly speaking you need well composed shots and prime can be a limitation in this case.

Wonder if Canon will ever launch a 100-400 f2.8 version or even 100-300 range.. with IQ, AF quality almost to those of the primes... but canon is quite fixed to 2.8 for primes in ranges from 300mm onwards!!

I totally agree with u. Techno gadget's pricing is ridiculously. Why should i pay local set prices for a grey set which just provide me with shop warranty. Totally doesn't make sense at all.

I might buy something from there, only if techno points a gun at my head...

I have owned these;
- Sigy 150-500 OS
- Canon 300 f4 is,

My take on them, Sigy had to be calibrated twice coz once was only a general job to get it focusing properly. Second time was to sharpen it at f9 for birding. And like most reviews, it goes soft after 420-450 range. Still sharp on my 60D.
Canon was nice n sharp from f5.6..but i shot alot on f7.1-f9 in M mode incase of a sudden bird or animal appearing.

I traded and sold them resepctively for a 100-400 is and Sigy 120-300 2.8 OS (gen 2). One for girlfriend use and travel, the other for BIF n my use when we go birding and hiking. Heavy as hell, but for some reason, the Sigy's OS doesnt talk as properly on my 1d3 as how it does to my 60D. So,it is purely on Tv or M on 1d3.

Saving for bigger gun now, since 300 or 400 isnt getting me the distance i need. TC is also so-so depending on lighting as mentioned by other bros.

So, TC, the decision is entirely yours when it comes to buying a proper lens cos seriously, 300 f4 is?unless u are doing alot of walks in the jungle...but it depends on lighting. The f2.8 suggestion is better. But to shoot in open, you need longer reach...tc wont be satisfying.

If on budget, the Canon 400f5.6L is a very sharp lens even with 1.4x TC. All birders will tell you in some point of time that he will never have enough reach.

I started off with a 100-400L and to me this lense is not sharp enough on the tele end when slap with a TC. So I got myself a 400f5.6L. Used that lens for a while till I got a good offer for an antique Canon 500 f4.5. (Please be reminded that there is no spare parts available for this lense). It was a very good lens and I loved it a lot. Due to the fear that it will fail one day and becomes an white elephant, I sold that off after saving enough for the 600mm f4 mk1. If you ask me how the 600 compare to the 500m, I would say the 500mm is better even though it does not have IS.

Iam curious why do u say the 500mm is better over the 600mm?
Weight issue or optics performance?

600mm mk1 is not as sharp when i compare a friend 600mm mk 1 copy with my 500mm mk1, unsure if his is lemon or not

There were some review that says the 500 mk1 is sharper than the 600mk1. Maybe the weight issue or longer focal length that causes more prone to vibration. I'm using Gitzo 3 series tripod and Wimberly Gimbal ver 1. My old 500mm f4.5 (non IS) was very light and can be handheld. The difference is not really noticeable if you dont do pixel peeping. I have more keepers with my 500 than my 600 but I dont have a chance to do a side by side comparison cos I sold my 500 before I bought my 600. I had sent my 600 and my 5D3 for calibration/service some month back and there is some improvement.
