Summar.

I just got this 1938 (according to serial number)
lens, and mine is not scratched, though the lens
barrel has seen better days.

The Summar is a lens which glows, because it
tends to flare, is soft wide open, and vignettes.

In other words, it isn't everyone's favorite lens.
But I bought it because it produces an image
which you can't get these days with the modern
lenses.

I have not decided on whether to shoot this
in color, which has a washed out look, or in
black and white. I was testing it in my R-D1,
produces nice saturated colors.

Anyone with experiences and pictures from
their summar to share ?

I will post mine later when I get a notebook
which reads SD-Cards.

"Photography is painting with light! The blurs, the spots, those are errors!
But the errors are part of it, they give it poetry and turn it into painting.
And for that you need as bad a camera as possible! If you want to be
famous, you have to do whatever you're doing worse than anyone else
in the whole world."

I intepret Tichy quote above as "good or bad, if you take the same photos like everyone
else, then you are not going to be famous" :)

It just goes to show. It's the man not the machine. Really gives a new meaning to "If cannot swim, don't say Swimming trunks too big". GET OUT THERE AND START SHOOTING PEOPLE !!!.. Inspirational. Thanks Ray

both are contrast and brightness adjusted. 2nd picture was
R-D1 setting "film 3" with contrast turned to high.

in the first picture, you can see the "glow" like a thin veil over the
face, this is a consistent phenomenon with Summar. Great for
portrait shots.

This was shot with an uncoated summar, wide-open. (in camera contrast accidentally set to "medium" instead of "standard") :

Nice shot!

I like the Summar size and especially the old classic filter that "blend" into the lens. With the collapsible lens, it is so compact with a Barnack...:)
