Either the 55-250IS for 300+ in the 2nd hand market (easily obtainable),

or

18-200IS if you've the budget to spend (i think 800+ range for 2nd hand),

or

18-270VC for the extra reach, costing about the same as a 18-200IS if i'm not wrong.

All are effective for general use. =) cheers.

IS for long zoom is important as at max reach you'll need at least 1/200 to get a reasonably sharp picture assuming you're able to keep your hand still enough. So get one with IS that's within your budget, current batch of , non-L, IS lens are proven to provide at least 2-3 stop.

Personally for the delicate telephoto zoom that is below 200mm, I would get one with at least a F2.8 with IS. Else I would rather stick with the Canon 18-200mm IS lens.

55-250... Ard $300+...
If you dont mind changing lens...

18-200 Ard $900-$1k+ (If im not wrong)
If you dont wish to change lens..

Although 70-200 f4 is a nice lens, but it has no IS which i would not recommend and the 70-200 f4 IS is way above your budget.... Thus i think only the 2 above lens is worth considering..

18-200 for versatility

55-250 for improved IQ over 18-200, but its not alot.

70-200 for image quality, but consider if you want the IS or not. Better to get the IS, and one time pain instead of upgrading later.

I'm on a 450D, and had a 55-250, bought the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and the 55-250 was chucked in a corner. Since then i've sold the 55-250 away.

Tamron 18-270mm is $990.

how about Canon 18-200mm ?? how much it cost ar? cos i'm also planning to get a new lens

and where to go buy at? cos i only know cathy photo.

there is always the 75-300mm USM (non IS) at abt 200 dollars

There are too many choices, combinations and lens out there. Better to decide you budget then choose the gear that fits within the budget. So have you decided how much to spend?

If you want "first" hand you can get the Canon one at around $900. Arrange with any CS bro here who is looking to get a 500D/50D body, get the kit packaged with a 18-200mm lens with him and both of you are in a win-win situation.

70-200mm f4 is a good one if you have limited budget.

In the 1st place u should get the kit 2 instead, now if u buy the 18-200mm len alone like not worth the $$ loh............

Kit 1 $1299 Kit 2 $1999 18-200 len $1299 (all price as reference to RRP)

Yea this is wad i feel too.
Should i would most likely gonna get the 55-250

With a kit, the 18-200 pretty much.

But since you already have a body, it really makes no sense to get the 18-200 at its uber inflated price. Not to mention you already have the 18-55 IS which, despite all those naysayers who automatically condemn an kit lens, is actually a pretty decently lens according to many lab tests.

Value - 55-250mm

Max out your budget - 70-300 IS USM. Fast, accurate and silent USM, and very long reach
Or If you can cope without IS, 70-200 F4L. Your first L quality lens. ‘Nuff said. If I had the $$ I would ditch my 55-250 and get this in a heartbeat. Was blown away when I tried it.

If u can afford, spend more get the IS version of that.

yea both the 70-300 IS USM n the 70-200L IS are really great lens. But it is really over my budget .
Maybe next time then i get either 1 or them :D

I think you can score a first hand 70-300 IS USM for under 1k. Coincidentally there’s one with 11mths warranty on the Buy and Sell now for 800.

hi TS, for ur budget i would recommend 70-300 IS USM? You should be able to get one in BnS for about 700 to 800.

18-200 is a good all rounder lens but having 11X optical zoom in one lens, you might have to compensate it in terms of image quality. Plus the price is way too steep in my opinion.

55-250 cheap and good. Some say image quality same as 70-300 but personally having used both, i think the 70-300 have a slight edge over it. Build of 70-300 is also more solid.

of course 70-200 with IS is the best but its going to blow a hole in your budget.

have fun scouting for you lens :)

Sorry, pls pardon newbie jumping in
The first number on 18-200, 50-250.... the 18, 50 indicates how "wide" the lens can capture, doesn't it?

So, the lower the number, the wider it becomes?
Currently I use 17-50 Tamron, sometimes I feel that my lens is not wide enough for taking landscape. Is wide angle lens expensive?

Eh is 70-200m f4L suitable if i were to shoot handheld?

i think this is very much dependent on what you are shooting. sports in the day with plenty of sunshine? not a problem at all. for action shots, IS won't make any difference.

Get the 55-250 IS. 18-200 is convenient but I just don't like the distortions.

Try zooming to 25mm and above, the distortion would not be visible.
