That's probably enhancement that you meant. Try taking a shot without strobe at 20m, no matter how you touch up with PS, the colour will not look natural or pleasing.

Just for sharing, the film guys tend to approach taking uw photos correctly exposed and correctly colour balanced first, and then using PS as a tool for touch up and colour enhancement. Proportion of 80/20 or 90/10 i.e. may be up to 10 - 20% dependency on PS ;)

That is definitely true, else will not see people using strobes underwater anymore....

Ok to shoot without strobe for depth of less than 5m. Beyond that pics would look wash out. PS can correct colours but cannot create colours.

not true.. 5m or less you still get the red, anything more red starts to disappear, by 7m red is out from the sunlight,

by getting close to the subject, and with your internal strobe itself, you can bring the red back into the picture.

not sure about 5060, 5050 can fire off the flash in supermarco mode.
does have the shadow effect from the lens port, but abit of ajustment here and there, you still can shoot good pictures.

Hi guys,

I read some articles that I found in the forum about strobeless photography.
ANyone here has tried and succeeded?

Just wanted to find out what the difference was with a strobe and without.

thanks.

wellwell... its not a must to use strobe for UW photography. U can try for yrself.. a few ppl here dun use external strobe for different reasons (boh $$ to buy stobes, act cool, dun know how to use strobes.. etc..) the moral of story is u can still enjoy shooting without the strobes.. ;) or with internal strobe.. ;p

Strobes definitely helps to brighten up yr subjects.. but u need to know how to control it... to give u the best result... :)
so.. if u hav $$$ to spare.. either u can give them to me.. ( :D hee..) or u can buy one.. and ask the experts here to give u some pointers...

You can fire internal flash of cos lar.... but the light can reach the subject or not is another thing mah.... u take super macro with flash underwater without external flash at less than 5 meter lor, i dun think u will ever get a sharp, focused, well lid picture.

Well I guess, strobes definately are expensive equipements. And it also means more weight for trips. But nevertheless, its almost like a "must-have".

Have you seen the Mustard guy's article? Some of the wide angle shots look better than taken with a strobe. It looks almost natural .

Still, I am amazed. But at the same time, confused about how he did it. Apparently, he went to different depths to calibrate the white balance?

Other than Dtan's masterpiece in strobeless shooting, which i failed to see the beautiful blue ringed octopus at first, but now can already... :D
who else has pictures that say, "YES, that Mustard guy's ambient light shooting method works" ?

The thing is if you are shooting at less than 5m under ideally conditioned sunlight and clear water, you don't even need a strobe for WA.
