Always thought that true macro lenses were corrected for flat field work. This is esp. important when used to copy documents.

dat is but one of the characteristics of a dedicated macro lens. others, for example, are like the close focusing distance (sometimes measures in a few cm).

these are not true macro lenses. a more correct way of looking at them is that they are zoom lenses with macro function. these lenses do not give u true 1:1 (ie life size) magnification.

eg the tamron lens u quoted gives 1:2 (ie half sized) magnification.

Not exactly a fool proof way to identify a macro. As there are also macro lenses that can only achieve 1:2 magnification. One of the characteristics of macro lens is that the design of the focusing mechanism tends to "rack" a whole set of lens elements to achieve the closer than normal shortest focusing distance in that particular focal length. Unless the lens design is internal focus, you can see most macro lens extends out quite substantially when focused to its extreme end.

Yes, distortion control is critical in macro.

Car try ur luck in HK. There are still a few brand new sets per month. Priced at about 6,500 HK$.

Yes. In fact, the 70-180 cannot achieve 1:1, but only 1:2 I believe....

I believe its about 1:1.3.

Yes, you have to stick a 6T diopter on it to take it to 1:1.
I've got the lens and 6T and it works quite well.

No it won't, its relative to the image formed on the plane be it a bigger or smaller plane.
