Storing my Contax IIIa properly

Hi,

I recently purchased a Contax IIIa rangefinder. I love it, and I'm having a blast using it (both the meter and shutter are accurate!). However, I do have a question regarding storing it.

Currently I have it in a well fitting camera bag, sitting on its side. Is this appropriate? Or should rangefinders be stored sitting on their bottoms to prevent any kind of rangefinder misalignment (especially in such an old camera)?

Also, how do I prevent 'Zeiss bumps'? The camera I have has flawless leatherette and I want to make sure it stays that way. Is it an issue with humidity and corrosion? I have some silica bead packs in my camera case to absorb any sort of moisture.

Thank you, I appreciate the help.

congrats on the new contax.. I've got it as well & it sure is a fine piece of kit..

I keep mine in a dry cabinet and so far there have been no issues.. no zeiss bumps to report.. just set it to 40-43% humidity & that's it..

don't think storing it in any particular position will affect the mechanism though..

Hi there,
I used to have a IIa bought from Henry Scherer, anyway he told me that the bumps is because Zeiss Ikon used original cowhide, somehow make the back prone to rust. Keeping the camera dry will prevent corrosion but if they are already growing then u can send to him to surgically remove them. The leatherette will still have zeiss ikon stamp on it

Hope this helps;)

i would like to ask, if i store my camera with film in the dry cabinet, will it affect the film?? :dunno:

nah don't think so.. but longest I've stored cam with film was 3 weeks

I have stored a film slr loaded with velvia 100 for close to 9 months...processed normally, everything looked normal, no issues whatsoever.
