My 700si which is kept in a humidity controlled cabinet have the following symptoms...

*the rubber portion of the handgrip is sticky and cracks are appearing.

Does anyone else have this problem?:dunno:

What I did for my 7000i hand grip which was peeling off already was to use the black tape used to take up wires.

Pretty ok now. :bsmilie:

In future apply petroleum grease on the rubber portion. This will prevent it from drying out.

Mine just start to get sticky last week after 10 full years of service...

It is still bearable, but not sure if it will get worse.

Any advise from the net?

take your camera out often -- i suppose that's one way to "balance" the moisture it absorbs and for the cabinet to take away...

there is a product in the market more for industrial purposes.. which is suppose to regulate the RH level rather than absorbing it....
my friend selling...

Applying petroleum based product to rubber is a mistake... it would attack the rubber.
The rubberised handgrip on my 700si is not dry, in fact it's oozing some liquified stuff between the cracks. Does any owners of 800si or Dynax 9 have this problem on their cameras? The textured handgrips appears to be made of some hard polymer instead of rubber:dunno:

Generally Petroleum Jelly is apply to o-ring to prevent them for drying up. Unless of course the rubber is silicon base.

Older minolta AF cameras have this problem. The grip cracks up and bits actually drop off. Once you see some white discolouration on the grip, it means it is going to crack.

I had to learn the hard way. Bought a used 8000i and once I was home tried to mount the flash on the hotshoe. Must have gripped the camera quite hard to dismantle the flash. Hey, the grip just disintegrated. But the best thing is, the camera continued to function well. I will give top marks for the minolta electronics. But the body-build on AF cameras is another thing altogether. Manual cameras built by minolta lasts a lifetime, that I will vouch for.

I actually threw my 8000i body in the rubbish bin at my lift landing in Hougang. Even Cash Converters did not want the body.

send it to sony, u tell them u want 2 replace to 800si grip. I think they will help u do it.
My already change, now grip better, but i did it in KM service centre, cost only abt $70 include GST.

They can do that? I'd better pay Sony Service Centre a visit soon.
Was thinking of getting a Dynax 7 or 9 to replace my 700si.

I sent my 700si and 9xi to Sony Service Centre on monday and got a call yesterday that there are no more spares for the 700si handgrip and card door. However they can fit the 800si grip onto the 700si body for $80. I told them to proceed with the replacement and hope to get the 700si back by next week. The 9xi is still working perfectly.

Good to hear they can repair your camera grip. A little expensive.

Dynax 700si lives again!

My 700si now sports a new texturised handgrip as in the 800si.
Total cost for the check-up for both cameras + change of handgrip is $78:D
 Well done, Sony:thumbsup:
