Steve Huff: 1st look video of new 35 summilux

like all things Leica..

Don't worry...

There's still an alternative...

Voigtlander 35/f1.4

Available in both Single Coated and Multicoated some more! :bsmilie:

Like many, I'm curious why Leica chose to update the 35mm Summilux ASPH when the previous version was already delivering such legendary performance. I know the new one offers floating lens elements, but not that the previous generation was any slouch (nor that there was any competitor that came close to its quality).

I'm definitely curious to see if the new generation delivers better image quality (although we're shooting wide open most of the time to see much improvement in corner sharpness), without compromising the great bokeh of the predecessor. Steve Huff mentioned about focus shifts with the previous 35mm lux asp... I didn't have any issues with that (lucky me!). Did any one here encounter focus shift?

Design wise, the metal lens hood looks nifty, but I wonder with they made provisions for filters after screwing on the lens hood. The aperture ring looks set distinctly set apart which is a good thing, since the previous version has the aperture ring pretty close to the lens hood mounting ring.

I still love my 35mm Summilux ASPH... for the time being? :)

I think the new version is smaller, guess thats an improvement.

As to why the need to update, vorsprung durch technik i guess

hopefully the wait is less painful than the noctilux 0.95 ...
read somewhere this one shipping in July... called up the AD to put name down but was told no news (price and availability) from Schmidt yet... bummer!

Today, Sean Reid has released new article "Fast 35mm RF lenses for M9"

In it, he compares:

. new 35mm f1.4 Summilux ASPH (July 2010 new release)
. old 35mm f1.4 Summilux ASPH
. CV 35mm Nokton f1.2 ASPH
. CV 35mm Nokton f1.4 (Single Coated)
. CV 35mm Nokton f1.4(Multi-coated)

It is a very comprehensive and good review. No prizes for guessing the winner.

Apparently the old version has a nagging focus shift issue.
