Steps in buying a DC

Hi, I am a newbie like many other visiting this Newbies Corner. I am trying to get a DC, the Canon A40. I heard that it has lots of problems, like the focus not clear when zoom and max, dead pixels on cam and such. Can someone tell me how to check for these things and other stuff?
