Staunch EF lens lover.

I'm one of them too. The reasons:

  1. Compatibility - If there is a problem between the lens and the body, Canon cannot pinpoint it's the 3rd party lens problem
  2. Resale Price - Resale price is definitely higher compared to 3rd party ones, although I'm seldom in the buy and sell forum
  3. Quality - I'm not saying 3rd party lenses quality is no good, just that I trust Canon ones more!
  4. Aesthetic - Canon body and lens looks better than Canon body and 3rd party lenses right? :P

In the mid 1990s I bought 2 Sigma lenses for EOS and they are virtually worthless now - if I bought Canon, I would have lost less $$$.

(The Sigmas cannot be used with newer EOSs and cannot be rechipped)

Who cares? If EF-S work for you then use it. If Nikkor lens work for you then use it. A lens is a tool, not an investment like real estate or fine art. I use EF-S, EF or what ever suit my requirement.

I buy only what I need and what I can afford, end of story.

Put it this way... the feeling of having an L lens on the camera is priceless... it's just like driving a ferrari. Do you think ferrari owners buy it just for the performance alone? Obviously not. The posing factor is half the equation. ;p

I'm sorry I have to disagree that lenses are not an investment. The fact that it's an investment to take good photos and quench your photography thirst is already an investment!

If one can fetch a higher selling price at a later date when the lens came to not much of a use, that will be another bonus right?

If that is a huge concern when u buy lens then u got big problem. I buy what lens suit my shooting need. If I can shoot with 50/1.8 but 50/1.4 fetch me better price after 5 yrs shd I buy the 1.4 at 5x the cost? Dat's madness. Unless u already got the 200/1.8L.

My reason:

I choose EF cuz I love L:sweat:

Please read...that's a bonus, not the main reason. Anyway, your 1.8 is still a Canon right? We're talking about staunch EF lens lover here.

All L lenses being EF mount, its a added bonus. That is why EF17-40mm F/4L are hot property. Act as a Ultra-wide zoom on the FF and a standard zoom on the 1.6x LF.
What's more to ask for.
IF I am ask to make a choice between the EFS 18-55mm f/2.8 and EF 17-40mm f/4L, and bearing in mind the whopping price difference between the two, give me the L anytime. I would rather forego the extra one stop advantage.

I would love to get only Canon EF lenses especially the L lense, but my budget never agrees to it, so I have to be satisfied with using a couple of value for $$ 3rd party lenses, together with a couple of cheap EF lenses;p

Yah, some 3rd party lens are great val for $$$. My sigma 70-300 APO DG is super sharp and great colours and contrast. Tamron 28-75 got me some great imgs too.

I think you meant 17-55. One stop could make a big difference in capturing the moment you want. One stop plus IS (up to 3 stops) could make even a bigger defference.

For the last 25 years I've own and use so many brands of camera system from point & shoot to medium to even digital Views for my work, glad I did not stick to just one brand if I did my brain will be too small to think now! cheers

I'm staunch to photography, lucky me.

I will never buy any 3rd party lens. Reason is these 3rd party companies seem to be only thriving to remain as 3rd party companies. These companies probably own a full collection of Nikon and Canon lenses, and they will open it up, study them, cut as many corners as they could and re-manufacture them to their own specs at a lower cost to cater to the 3rd party's market. Canon started out like that during the era when Leica and Contax dominated with their range finders. The canon pioneers bought a leica camera and opened it up, replicated them and sold as their own brand. At that time, canon didn't even had the technology to manufacture their own lens, thus they liased with Nikon :D But one must see that Canon do not wish to stay this way, instead they went all out and thrived to be the best, and became a Camera manufacturer catering to a market right below Leica, which is way too expensive for the masses. If canon would called themself a #3 manufacturer in the world, only Leica would be the only one standing in front of canon.

This hobby isn't cheap, thus what 3rd parties offered for this hobby is specially catered for a lower market. Basically you get what you paid for. And I would rather be more patient and save for a canon lens :)

You seem to have forgotten that Sigma makes bodies too. ;)
