Starting out in Short Films

Hi everyone, my friend and I recently did a short film and its our first time.

This was shot with a Nikon D3100 and a Canon 600D.

Audio is not exactly good due to our recording environment and equipment.

We just started out and looking to doing more similar productions!
Do have a look and really looking forward to your comments! :)

Great Effort. You have couple of good shots which I really like.

Audio is a tricky one. Even me, still figuring it out every time I do a video.

Keep them coming!

Hi daniyal! thanks alot for the encouragement! :)

Yes, well done for a first timer! Kudos.

For recording V/Os, always remember to keep the recording device closer to the source, i.e your voice. Right now it sounds like your in a bathroom. For better acoustics and less room noise, try getting a couple of pillows and surround the recording device with them, and get close to the mic. As for post audio, remember to keep the VO above the rest of the tracks so it'll sound more upfront.

Looking forward to watching another film of yours. ;)

Thanks bajaking for the feedback!!

Did'nt thought of the pillow method. We'll probably save up and get a proper mic though. Any recommendations on that? :)

If you have to use your camera as the recording device, be sure to use manual settings and turn down the mic gain because the higher the gain, the more noise it tends to generate.

Rule of thumb is to always dial down the in-camera gain to zero, then slowly increase to a point that when you record, your volume is relatively good to bring into post without any gain.

Just know that the DSLR on-board mics are really crappy so, best is to get an external recorder. A cheap one like the Zoom H1 will set you back about $140 which is quite a good deal.

Nice work!

Me too was troubled by the audio when I first started doing video editing. I've invested in a "Rode VideoMic Pro" and was satisfied with it.
Unlike the zoom H1, the Rode Mic needs to be attached to the camera hotshoe. Of coz u can get a cheaper version "Rode VideoMic" but the size is bigger than the Pro version.

RODE VideoMic Pro lined into a H1.. Fantastico! :D
