Hey people!

Ive been doing photography on my 10D and 40D for a few years now. And am moving on to videography. Mostly will be shooting on holidays and "street shots/timelapse" and in time to come simple short films. Currently i got a deal for a 2nd hand canon hf s100 for $800 by one of the mates here and am honestly really drawn on to it. I'm still exploring my options though. Is the canon hf s100 a good camcorder? what are your views on it? My budget is around 1K. Any recommendations from the pros? :) haha

Thanks for reading! :)

If I had 1K, and want a camera for making short films, and already own some Canon lenses, I'll go with a secondhand 550D,600D,650D HDSLR.
HF S100 is a good camera for sports, long event recording, and documentary. It will not do timelapse. ( I think) The one thing that it has that all the other DSLR mentioned don't:a headphone jack.

But don't let that get in the way of much better color, low light performance, lensing option a HDSLR has to offer.
For really bare bones travel photography/videography, consider the sony RX100 pocket camera, the image and video is almost DSLR quality.

2nd hand 7D is about 1k right now.

Get 550d or 500d with 35mm or 50mm prime with magic lantern install and u are ready for shooting hdvideo an timelapse

Thanks for all the quick response! Yeah i did consider all of that but decided that at the end of the day having a single dedicated camcorder is still what im looking for especially with the light-weight. Whats more i alr have two DSLRS on my hand and its more than sufficient for me :) so... any advice on the hf s100 though? oh! and thanks for the link of tht second hand 600D! haha

If your mind is already set on the camcorder then by all means go ahead and get it. But doing timelapse with a camcorder is really stupid to be honest. It takes up too much space. You won't be getting much DOF from camcorders too, if you want to do short films, DSLRs are better . Still good for holiday purposes though i prefer dslr's over handheld camcorders.

Timelapse function in camcorders operates very much the same as DSLR. A frame of video is recorded every fixed interval. You can decide on the interval to suit the desired speed you want. The only pain is that it takes 25 frames to make just one second of footage.
