To understand how aperture works is to compare it to the pupil of the human eye. The less light there is, the wider you open your pupil, The aperture on a camera, which is measured in f-stops, does exactly the same thing by controlling the amount of light that reaches the CCD. Lower f-stop numbers (e.g. 2.8) widen the aperture and allow more light to get to the CCD. At a given exposure value, aperture and shutter speed are always interdependent. If you change the former, the latter will have to be changed as well to keep exposure the same.
Aperture openings also control depth of field. Smaller aperture openings keep a larger part of the image in sharp focus while larger aperture openings will keep the subject or focal point pin-sharp while the rest of the image remains blurred. The smaller the aperture, the larger depth of field. For optimum image quality select a medium aperture.

f factor? What do u mean by 'f factor'? :dunno: Suggest u read up first. Websites like luminous landscapes (google!) offer great indepth for articles for newbies.

And the quality of a good lens to a newbie, somehow gets affected by reviews heavily instead of their own eyes and skill.

Anyway, it seems that u're very new. A small budget breakdown on how much u'll prolly need to spend (if u're getting all ur stuff brand new).
Canon EOS 350D (w/kit lens) - Apprx $1800
Speedlite 480EX - Apprx $300+?
Tripod - Apprx $200
Bag - Apprx $80
Spare battery - Apprx $30
Sigma 18-200mm - Apprx $600

U do the math. Even at 2nd hand retail pricing, for things like $100 or $200, I doubt u can get a lens (short of the 18-55mm kit lens which is already included in a brand new 350D package. I dun see any sense to get 2 same lens for a starter).

yeah, use the kit lens first.
Just get the kit and start shooting, and figure out what you need later. This way you can spread out the expenses.
Would have offered to sell you my 350D kit lens, but I kinda of like it and also bought a filter for it.

Personally, it depends on which function you are trying to use and type of lens you interested in.

For starters, Canon have prime lens, cheapest you can get is for $100(50mm f1.8 2nd hand). Or IS lens (28-135mm IS USM) which i am using, provide a primary walkaround lens but the price range is a bit steep given by your budget. And finally the L lens (70-200mm f4) which most of the Canon users would dream of owning provide the best contrast and colors of the shots taken, this is out of your budget.

If you are looking at zoom lens, maybe a 70-300mm lens multiply by the crop factor will be tele enough for you to consider. For wide lens, i can't think of any that fits your budget. Maybe any CSers can help?

so mostly i should get a kit lens? and second advice is some 3rd party 18 to ***?

If you want to buy Canon Original batt, go to TCW, look for becky. She will give you good price.

Canon EF 28-105mm USM Mk I Macro
http://auctions.yahoo.com/sg/auction/97376247

99% of the time anything that has canon imprinted on it is good but dont quote me. i'm a nikon user too!
the 28-105 is a versatile lense for everyday shooting as well as the occasional macro, really depends on what you need. specific lense are catered for specific tasks, there are all in one but nothing is perfect

small nitpick: the guy is selling w/ non-orig front and rear cap

I tot 10D does not support EF-S lens? 350D Kit lens is EF-S right?:nono:

The 350D kit lens, which is the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 can only work on 30D, 20D, 350D and 300D only.

my advise is to go to the camera shops and try out the various models before u decide. same for the lens. its very much an individual choice.

my choice now. 350d, kit lens, sigma 18-50/2.8.
previously also used ef50/1.8, 24/2.8, 28-105/3.5-4.5, sigma 24-60/2.8,
d70,nikkor 50/1.8, 24/2.8, sigma 18-50/4-5.6, canon 650,nikon fm2,f90x,fe10,fm3a, olympus e300.

no doubt about it. 50mm 1.8

none other is below $200. plus this one gives u gd quality at low price. thumbs up:thumbsup:

i will prefer a 35mm which becomes a normal lens for a 1.6crop camera.

yes you are right, i just tried the ef-s 18-5 II on the 10d and the rubber/plastic part of the kit lense prevents it from being mounted as it sticks deeper into the mount compared to an ef lense

apologies to htthach, hope u didnt get the kit lense if you plan on getting a 10d
