Forget about Singapore. Even in the pitch dark place somewhere near Mersing, this star trail pic also has hint of light. But the difference is the amount of stars you can record. Really blew me away. I never knew what the Milky actually looked like until I went for that trip with some of the TASOS members.

Very interesting and nice Star Trails.
Really great. Thanks for sharing.

I still won't give up the idea that we can do star trails in Singapore. Hope to be able to find the location. Cheerz.

Thanks for the suggestion. I believe Malaysia has a huge potential for Star Trails taking but I was thinking more of going to one of those off-shore islands around Singapore to try first. :)

Never underestimate the power of ambient skylight. Sometimes, your film/CMOS/CCD records more than our eyes see.... :)
Great pic btw, except for the flailing strap(?) on the left and that line in the middle.......

That thing on the left is due to a passing aircraft. The line in the middle is because the lab scratched the whole roll of my neg!!! :(

Hehehe.. I tried.. maybe I need to find darker locations in Singapore. Haven't found any yet. Not even Lim Chu Kang. Still not dark enough. Maybe can try Sentosa and shoot the south sky instead.. Most of the time the outcome is that the sky is already brighter than the stars before you can open the shutter long enough to get any trails.

Agree with that. Lim Chu Kang side is still consider quite bright too.
I was thinking more of St. John Island instead, but might be trying out Sentosa for a start. Cheerz. :)

Nice  I should have known better when I'm in Australia. The sky is clear as .... Waiting for your future trials.

haha, i'm still shooting, but not as much as last time :)

maybe u can try punggol, seems quite dark but i guess will still have a bit of light pollution. bring insect repliant, lots of mosquitos there

Francis,

Star trails are possible in Singapore, and there are some tricks possible.

First, you need to use an ISO setting higher than 100 to capture the fainter stars. It's no use to set the ISO low and expose long because the fainter stars will not be captured. Try using ISO 400 and above.

This of course leads to problems with noise and overexposure, so if you're not a purist, you can use a technique of adding them together using the 'lighten' mode in ps. There are some web articles on how to do this but I don't have them at the moment.

So far, the best locations I know of in Singapore for such things are Lim Chu Kang and East Coast Park (Changi SAFRA) facing SEast, but Sentosa is a good bet too. On a clear night, you'll be surprised how many stars you can capture.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,
Just to join in the fun... :bsmilie:

Below are taken from Mersing, Malaysia during one of the observing trip last year. Weather wasn't good and got a thin layer of clouds, so the Milky Way was not clear. But the star trail still look ok.

Bintan/Batam is also good.

Yes... Going to Batam before... night sky is quite good if you go to the place far from the city area at night. I think the night sky should be very good if can go to the last island.

But not so convenient and more expensive compare to Malaysia... and the customs... :( :( :(

Have a nice day.
