Did this few year back.

good job.

just wanna share my own observation, i think now till july is the best time of the year to observe stars, the sky is clear this period of time

Yes, I noticed the past few nights quite clear. Next month is also good time to try milky way

I went to punggol yesterday night... Try to take milky way~ but when I using over ISO 1000 to take picture, the sky will over explore ~ I haven edit my picture yet~ hope LR can help me to see what I want~

Ok this is my latest attempt last Saturday. Again, the weather was not in favor, the sky was cloudy and the stars were not really bright. 250 exposures were stacked together in PS to create the startrail image. Setting: 250 X 25 second, iso 200, f3.5. Taken by a broken nikon 18-55mm kit lens, manual focus to infinity.

(*) Full disclosure: I have been trying new method of contrast masking technique to create composite startrail pictures. The picture below is a composite of 2 pictures, one is the stacked startrail image taken in East Coast Park and one is the foreground taken in changi airport. This technique was introduced by Lincoln Harrison, see tutorial here: http://www.lincolnharrison.com/blog/2014/6/22/photoshop-cs6-advanced-masking .

This technique is very useful for taking startrail picture in highly polluted area since it allows you to create pictures with nicely exposed foreground. Enjoy!

Hi, understand this thread is about star trails. I am looking to try that soon. However, may i ask what should I do to make the sky (picture above) to appear blackish rather than blue? The above picture was ETTR 10 frames of 8 sec manually stacked together. Adjusting the temp give me either too blue or too purple.

2nd question. What software can i use to stack stars+landscape picture in a macbook? Photoshop auto align function cannot do the job.

Thanks.

Cant help you with the first question.

For free software to stack startrail images, get startrail.de from this website:
http://startrails.de/

It is free, it is simple to use and it offers great features.

To answer your first question, due to the light pollution we are experiencing, it is impossible to get entirely black sky. IMO, just use the white balance tool and strike a balance in between. If it is too blue/purple, you can always desaturate the individual colours.

For stacking of stars/star trails + landscape, it has to be done with layer masking in Photoshop. First, you have to load the star trails into stack and merge the numerous layers into a single layer and save it as a tiff file. Then you can open up the landscape photo and use it as a base layer, you then stack the star trail tiff file onto it(either in normal or lighten blend mode, depending on what you want to do) and finally create a layer mask and brush away what is not needed.

The same applies for stars, just that you do not need to create any star trail tiff file.

You can search YouTube for such tutorials, there are many of them out there.

Here is a startrail I took while in Mersing..

Linctran2204 - the contrast masking technique is powerful! Must go learn this.
