5. Star Trail from Waitaki Valley near Kurow. This would be my personal favorite if not because of the heavy clouds.

The rotation about the celestial pole has great potential, but i feel this shot can be much stronger with a better foreground anchor around the rotation.

i have been wondering how long an exposure these kind of picture take..

Thanks Ryan.

I don't even know or heard about the "Celestial Pole" until your comments. Read up about it in Wiki and it certainly give me the additional information for future shots.

As for the foreground anchor, the initial plan was to use the lone tree as the anchor. But my day time survey around the area shows lots of dungs and livestocks movement.

Further more, the night temperature is killing if I'm going to dig in for 3-hours.

Thanks once again, and I'll evaluate how it can be better done in my next visit to the same site.

Regards,
Jason Lee

Thanks Bayusuputra.

Yes, those are shot using a timer remote. I've program it to take 60 frames with each frame at 180 seconds.

Only about 20 frames is usable in Star Trail Waitaki-1 as the rest the frame are mostly covered by clouds.

Whereas for the other Star Trail Waitaki-2, I uses all the 60 frames to create the star trail and Star Trail Lake Pearson uses about 40. Too lazy to stack all the 60 frames ;p

Thank you for posting here coz I would have missed these beautiful pics if they were posted somewhere else.

Its mother nature I believe, so........... yeah world of nature.

Did anyone noticed the spaceships in pic #2?

Wow i spot it too! Looks like a spaceship haha

awesome shots :)
The star trails are such a beauty..
it definitely a dream of mine to capture beautiful star trails one fine night :)

Stunning results !!! I hope you can help me with a couple of questions :

1. What time of the night did you start shooting the Milky Way shots over Lake Wanaka ?
2. How did you locate the polar star in the star trail shots ?

I'm heading to New Zealand in a month's time and hoping to do some astrophotography while I'm there.

regards,

Chris

Hi,
2. How did you locate the polar star in the star trail shots ?
There is no pole star for the southern sky, but you can use the Southern Cross (Constellation Crux) to find the Southern Celestial Pole... just search the internet for it.

Have a nice day.

Thanks. But if you're taking from Singapore, I seriously doubt we could get any good star trail as the sky is very polluted with lights.

Spectacular

Thanks pal.

Hi Chris,

Glad to help.

For your 1st Q, I took around pass 21:00 hrs local time. As final daylight fall off the horizon pass 20:00 hrs, it would be better to take pass 21:00 hrs to show the full blow of the stars. The later the night, the greater the intensity of the stars up at the sky.

As for your 2nd Q, trust me, it is just plan pot luck as I only wanted to try out the star trail as it was my first attempt.

As what "giantcanopy" and "weixing" have mentioned, you can read up more about it. Maybe a good start would be Wiki. I've actually learn quite a lot from the lead provide by "giantcanopy".

Wish you a happy and smooth holiday as the summer season have started and the weather should be much better than the period I've visited.
