i see i see, i guess practice really does make things perfect! but like for an outdoor bbq at night, wont direct flash be abit harsh?

Control the flash ev... drop it if you are too close and adjust accordingly... After a few tries, you'd get the hang of it.. ;)

wa so ma huan..

aiyah! JUST SAVE UP FOR SB600 THEN.

anyone selling pls pm me ;p

thanks everyone for their help. very very useful info esp for a newbie like me! :)
Ya, so that's why most people suggesting a SB600/SB800/SB900 is the best.
However until you have experience with the older/3rd party flash then you know how troublesome is it.
Good luck for finding a 2nd or new SB600.

must be patient!

also, for a bbq at night and i wish to use the flash, which angle should i be pointing my flash?

Try it before you claim so... With the small diffusers such as omnibounce, etc doesn't help much. And with a large diffuser, you'd loose too much flash power.

Try it out first then you'd understand better. ;)

alkaline if you got extra $$ to throw away. (come throw $$ to me)

harsh shadows??? depends on how you use it and in wat situation, well again it's not easy to explain here in words.
Do the experiment yourself, bounce it, direct it, reduce power, diffuse it, etc... all are the possible ways to trial and error to get the image you want in the camera.
There are also light sphere and other "strange" items that can be use with your flash to reduce shadows and all the prices after you add up can get you a SB 800.

i see! well i guess i should get rechargeables.. eneloops or something. cant wait! gonna get my sb600 later.

anyway, many many many thanks to everyone whos been helping me and entertaining my silly questions! :)

very heartwarming to see such help from everyone. :)

An interesting read. Was also thinking about getting a 3rd party flash for a start with the D60. Looks like its better to stretch my budget and get the SB600 after reading all the advise and suggestions.

For me, I shoot direct with negative ev dialed in... Some shoot with a omnibounce, some use other diffusers... go try it out and see which u prefer.

yeah just got an omnibounce, still figuring out! damn fun! anyway,

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR HELPING MEEE.

guys, when you use your sb600/sb800, you guys set it to front curtain right? then how come when i set it to front curtain, and turn on my sb600 unit, the shutter speed on my camera is always 1/60, and my aperture when i change it from f4-f8, the ss remains the same! and then when i fire a shot, the flash is extremely harsh/flat. :/
