But again, if I may ask for the opinion of all. Coming back to the issue of this possibly being a grey set, would anyone of you have minded this being a grey set if you had gotten it at $600 instead of its usual price of $700+.
Meaning, if you can save about $100, would you all have still bought it even though it's a grey set with shop-only warranty?

I'll never settle for anything grey set. Period.

Perhaps not for the 580 EXII as this model has known issues (mainly with the hotshoe). If it were a 580 EX or 430 EX/II, I personally wouldn't mind taking the risk with a grey set. If a 580 EXII grey went for say $550, then the risk is offset by the substantial difference.

Good answer. My problem here is... how should I put it... I have not been swimming in the waters of Digital SLR and their accessories for long period of time. Therefore I do not know these things until lately.
There is a shop that I frequent. I know the man personally (this is important for my story). Now he would often give me good prices. And it is recently that I understood from postings in the CS forums that some of these are grey sets.
Just that, don't know how to broach the subject with him... "Eh ah... this ah.. Mr so and so ah.. Eh ah, you got non-grey set or not huh?"
Wah lau! Like that not pai seh meh hor...? Haha... tougher here cos I know him personally lah.

Great! You have given me your point of view from the other side. Thank you too!

If it's Intl warranty, there will be an Intl Warranty card. If local, there will be a Canon SG warranty card. No need to ask. Just look inside box can liao.

Shop warranty - fixed by who and where gotta clarify before paying ... someone told me that their shop warranty is 'send to Canon in JAPAN' to fix, another shop tried to change the topic LOL. I haven't really timed CSC vs Canon Japan in terms of turnaround time, but a postal package sent via registered airmail takes a week or so to reach Japan, longer during festive seasons. You might want to factor this in if repair time is of concern. If not, then its the same flash whether grey or non-grey.

So just to clarify... if there is either an International Warranty or a local Singapore warranty, then it is not considered a grey set. Am I right?

Mmmm... also an important consideration. Never thought of this aspect...

Agree. grey or not u'll see it in your package. Another thing is to know the market prices.

Yupe. I went digging into all my boxes and found that every one of them had either Singapore warranty, or International Warranty.
Looks like my grey set issue is non-existence. And my good friend in the shop has been truly gentlmanly and 'moh-tak-ding'! Well, a very good learning session for me. A happy man I will sleep tonight.

you are buying something and you are scared to ask how the warranty works or is there any warranty at all? :dunno:

There's nothing wrong even if you used the word "grey". Grey market is neither illegal nor unethical. If the warranty is international, you are more or less covered as much as Canon local warranty. (Canon sg service center *might* have preference for things bought in sg in case damage isn't covered by the warranty. You of course get extra 3 months too.)

If it's shop warranty, it's very likely to be a grey set regardless of where it was coming from. Ultimately, it's not the name that matters to you but what kind of warranty there is. And what's the problem of asking that question from the seller?

I got mine recently at 670 SGD, cash price, with 12+3mths local Canon warranty.:)

I'd rather buy the one with a local warranty card in it. I still haven't been able to trust any camera shops in Singapore at all.

Just ask questions. If they get irritated or annoyed, then just don't buy from them.

I got mine a week ago at 599 SGD, credit card, with 12+3mths local Canon warranty. Liang court audio house.

WoW! SGD 599 for local warrenty set is super good deal. Got to check it out. If true, then I will get 2 sets. Some more can pay by Credit Card. :D
I got my 580EXII (grey set) for SGD 650 a year ago.

Really? $599?
Too good to be true ...

Better check very carefully. If it's too good to be true, something is likely amiss.

Which large electronic retail chain (who's modus operandi has always been higher operational costs=higher prices) will actually sell brand new with local warranty at much lower than other specialized retailers?
