The A200 is old... when did you buy it? If you're out of warranty it won't be covered.

Go marketplace to buy 2ndhand (some are new actually) 18-55mm SSM kit lens. Around $100 and much better than 18-70mm kit.

Sony's DSLR service tends to be excellent, and a lot cheaper than people think. Thumbs up all the way!

well agreed to tat, i jus change my whole shutter unit and they only charge me $150 ($160.50) after gst, and help me clean the whole camera, now my viewfinder is damn clean, hehe,:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I believe he meant 18-55mm SAM(Smooth Autofocus Motor). ....Sony's SSM(Super Sonic wave Motor) lens are NOT cheap !

The newer Sony kit lens 18-55mm SAM is more sharper compared to the older 18-70mm lens, the newer Sony kit lens can compare in sharpness to Canon's 18-55mm kit lens.

Hope that helped:bsmilie:

Not so straight forward to answer your question. the Sony 18-70mm was a rebadge Minolta 18-70mm designed for the early Minolta DSLRs. Sony released their DT 18-70mm and DT 55-200mm as kit lens together with their Alpha 200, 300 and 350 in early 2008.
The 18-70mm seems to be the weakest link in the Alpha 350 kit as it was not up to the task of resolving the 350's 14.2 megapixel capability.

In May 2009, Sony launched 4 new 'budget' lense designated for the APS-c sensors, refer here:http://www.dpreview.com/news/0905/09051802sonyfourlenses.asp
These lense was to compliment Sony's new entry level DSLR, the A230, A330 and A380. The main difference from previous models was the SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) built into the lense. (*I suspect the reason Sony is doing this has got to do with their new E-mount offerings:))

I think the 18-55mm is an entirely new lens for Sony, however the new 55-200mm seems like just a SAM'ed version of their old DT 55-200mm lens.

For comparision of IQ between the 18-55mm SAM and the old 18-70mm lens, refer here: http://artaphot.ch/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=175&Itemid=43

Just want to share:

So I almost cannot close my mouth, happily collect the camera back with cost less than 30$
My friend who gave me the camera shouts "Are you serious?" on another side...
And now the guilt stuck me, should I return the camera to my friend... or...

Since your friend know the cost now, ask him whether he wants it back or not?
Or do you have something more useful for his 2 year old daugther?:)

This should be a sticky of sorts. Especially for users of A200/a700.

Just sent my A700 (finally) for what seems to be SSS problem.

They quote $80 for service charge. Not including replacement parts. If less than $150 they will proceed without my notice and to call me if repair costs more.

Just as I lent it to my wife to use for the first time this happens after using it for 3 years. She's now phobia to use my dslr.

Hope my total repair bill cost like earlier post at $120.

Hmm, weird. The CS girl told me that the engineer will call if there are a charges so only if I'm ok then they will provide. They never mentioned about if less than $150 then they will proceed.

Hopefully when I go there and collect, they won't give me surprises. but if the surprise is 'it's foc, we waive off the fee' then I don't mind haha :bsmilie:

I collected my unit from SSC yesterday, I paid $10.70 for inspection fee only. Not sure if the engineer really did a checking and servicing because when I turned on the cam, all my settings was there and even the date is correctly set. This is not the case with my previous encounter with them, as all my camera settings will gone and I have to reconfigure it.
