Sony RX100 Mark III

this & g1x m2
which 1 is better??

The RX100mkIII should be the much better deal but personally I would rather buy the G1XmkII just for the touch screen. :)

If the touchscreen is the only advantage that the G1X Mk II (simplifying as G1X below) over the RX100 Mk III (simplifying as RX below) then it says something about it hmms? :p

No offense to anyone, but I think the G1X just got thoroughly served... The RX will be priced squarely against the G1X and I'm really hard-pressed to think about why anyone will prefer the latter, specifications-wise:

  1. You have a bunch of Canon Speedlites hanging around
  2. You need the longer reach on the G1X (you have more room for cropping on the RX, which mitigates this point a little)
  3. You need to add filters to your camera lens (the assumption regarding the lack of filter adapters for the RX will most likely be shattered soon)
  4. You need the touchscreen on the G1X (this should rank low on this list, if the touchscreen means everything for the G1X then it just means using the G1X sans touchscreen is going to be bad, and I'll like to give the G1X more credit than that)
  5. You have a camera case that fits the G1X and thus don't want a smaller camera

Personally, I am already worshiping at the Altar of GR and I don't expect that to change due to budget constraints... I'm sure the RX will be a formidable sidekick to the GR, so much so that I secretly wish the pop-up EVF will be sub-par and I'll feel less impulsive about the potential sidekick replacing the master...

If I have to nitpick about the RX, here's an existing one: what's with their obsession over the 102x58mm measurements? When the first model came out, it was arguably to show how much better a performer it is compared to Canon PowerShot S-series, and the point was made. Would it kill them to lengthen the camera just a little more and sculpt a better grip to vastly improve the handling? The RX is also getting too chunky at 41 mm... On the upside, maybe the little extra thickness will help improve the handling, somewhat.

Too long to read.

For those that pre-order from shop, what is the price? Cannot be same price as what sony is selling then whats the point of buying from them? lol

Although personally, I think the RX100 is a better choice when compared to the G1X mkII. But frankly speaking... I can think of many things that many people would still buy G1XmkII over RX100mkIII.

As mentioned by you a few reasons,

1) More zoom.
2) Touch screen.
3) Can add external flash (although for a camera this size... I doubt many will want to do it. But the option is there... thus I am looking at RX100II)

Another few reasons would be,

4) Misunderstanding that a larger sensor would produce a better photo. And Canon do have a larger sensor.
5) Canon G1XmkII is already out in the market and you can walk into the shop and buy one. Sony's RX100mkIII is still not here yet, and people might not want to wait.
6) Some like Canon's feel more than Sony for whatever reason and ergonomic is a very personal thing.
7) Canon is still abit cheaper than Sony RX100mkIII
8) (I know this will cause an uproar, but come on... alot of people still have this feeling.) G1XmkII is a Canon camera.
9) Closely link to point number 8), there are plenty of Canikon fanboys and girls around who would go with nothing but Canon and Nikon cameras.

So there you have it. Although, I sincerely feel that RX100MKIII is a better choice for me (actually... I think RX100mkII is better for me).

Hahaha... valid points. ;) Especially for #6, which explains my ranting about the RX's too-small size.

For some reason I forgot that the G1X's RRP is already S$100 cheaper than the RX, price advantage to the G1X then as long as one is not buying the EVF accessory for that, heheh...

I camera should be fun to use as well. ;)

Would the Mk3 replace the Mk2 or would they co-exist?

All three models are on retail. :) It's almost like we have a "lite" model, the normal one and then the "pro", hahaha...
Yeah, the MKI still sells pretty well here...

Really? I tot mkI is already out of production?

Would like to hold both mkI and mkII to see what is the main difference in term of ergonomic... but frankly speaking, I am more or less sold to mkII. Can advise which shop sell both?

Ergonomics between Mk1 n Mk2 very similar to me.

None [that I know of]. I was kidding because blue_quartz made this claim. Ask him. ;)

anyone knows when will mk3 be released in stores? thanks!

My next compact camera. :bsmilie:

20MP sensor (same as RX100M2 model)
ISO 125-25600
24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens
Built in View finder (SVGA OLED Tru-Finder 1440k dots)
Tiltable screen (180 degrees up)
Record in XAVC S format (Same format of the Sony A7s but with no 4K output option)
Almost same size and weight as the current RX100/M2 models

sales of compact cameras dropping alot, most people are now using phones to take pictures, this market sector is super tough to meet sales quota!

Seriously? Wow.

While this may be true, I would argue that those who are in the market for a high-end compact camera want better IQ and controls than what most camera phones can offer, if at all.

I still think there is a big market, or should I say, an emerging market. Look at models like A7, RX1 etc. As technology advances, camera makers are able to put dslr capabilities inside smaller bodies, although DSLR will always have its place, many people are converting to a more "portable" cameras for easier travel. People may use phone to take pictures for instagram etc, but when people travel, they would most likely go for a camera for the IQ

I said all three are on retail because that seems to be the case still online such as Amazon, whether it's out of production and they are just clearing the final batches... I'm not sure.

I thought I read it on some press release too regarding the price cuts for Mk I and II, but I couldn't find it. I may have remembered wrongly for this part, but the availability still stands.

The ergonomics of all three is likely to be the same - you don't have a good, solid grip unless you go for something like this.
