Sony RX100 IV announced!

Checked the Mk IV at Nex this evening. The MkIV spots the same excellent viewfinder found on the NEX6, not the downgraded one in the A6000 and Mark III. Looking through it feels as if you are looking into an optical viewfinder! I miss that feeling when I upgraded from NEX6 to A6000 ! The rest of the camera feels almost like the Mk III except the usb and hdmi port doors which are smaller. While the focussing is supposed to be faster, I did not notice the difference. My take it bang-for-buck the mark III would be a great choice until the $1399 price tag of the mark IV falls... :)

I was quoted $1232 for the IV with a couple of free gifts. Anyway I picked up a lightly used III instead, don't need the advanced video features.

It's a different sensor so is there any significant diff in the IQ section?

May I know where did you get the quote?

$1399 is the RRP that is observed at all Sony shops and large retailers like Harvey Norman, etc.
The street price from camera shops like Ms Color, Alan Photo, SLR Rev and TK Photo should be lower. You can ask around. :)

Actually the EVF is really an OVF right? Cannot be Electronic since there is no lag or have the feeling you are looking into a LCD screen. I do find the AF rather instant as compared to MK3 which does have some hesitation.

No. It's an EVF. Resolution so insanely high it looks like an optical viewfinder. The NEX 6 and 7 had this too so not sure why they downgraded it to half that reso for A6000 and Mk III. As a result i can see lines on the evf of both. Glad they choose to bring it back. The evf is gorgeous!

I want to get this for the slow motion video only.. I know it may not be real 960 fps but the results I have seen should be perfect for all my needs... Will wait for A7S II to see if there is something which is just perfect in every way...

Why do you think it's not real 960fps? Its real 960fps, just with low resolution and limited recording time (2s for 1136 X 384 and 4s for lower resolution).

Recording time is fine.. If its real high frame rate slow mo then its amazing. A phantom camera which can shoot 1000 fps cost upward of 30-50k USD so it hard for me to imagine a $1200 can give similar fps...

I think this 4K + Slow motion pocketable camera unlocks another niche feature of the professional videography world at a fraction of the cost (and size), apparently the limitations proves to be outstanding at first but targeted audience who use this camera everyday should find it sufficiently satisfying. Otherwise professionals who need longer 4K and slow motion recording shouldn't be considering this unit, as these features consume alot of power and internal cooling in the camera would be required. Realistically, IMO this camera is in the right position with the right features and maybe a tad pricey, but fitting for features unavailable on other brands.

Aut I do really find the final output from this camera to be much feasible and satisfying for certain commercialised projects.

Hi nitewalk,
How is it compared to the Mark 3?

The image quality from the Mark 3 blows me away for sure. These days, I used it more often than my Pentax DSLR and A6000 mirrorless because its so compact, yet yields image that is as good as the bigger cameras. my only gripe is its not easy to get good bokeh with the small sensor. For portraits with bokeh, I would defer back to my Pentax but not much chance these days because the kids have grown up and no one likes their photos taken! sigh... :) With the RX100, I am now thinking of drastically reducing my APS-C systems inventory to a few essential pieces rather than hold so many and not use them. Yes, the RX100 is that good for grab-and-go shoot which is what I do these days !

Back to the mark IV. Looking at the specs, I doubt one can see any difference with regards to IQ under normal light but I would assume it would perform much better in low light. Is that your observation (assuming you upgraded!)

Cheers! :)

Hi, i do have to mention that my only use of the mark iii was at the showroom. Someone's paying for part of the camera so i have no qualms getting a new one. And to be frank, i can't see a different like, oh this image is taken by mark iii and that by mark iv.

So i got a mark iv because i'm not going to be paying much more than for a mark iii, plus i have a very good package with most of the freebies which are available to preorder customers.

For that, i guess i get the best available to me so i don't have to think about upgrading for some time. It suits how i travel as i found even slugging a XT1 and 27mm pancake to be cumbersome and i prefer to snap random nonsense on the go. The fact it looks like a random compact actually helps me to look less suspicious.

I guess with every tool, u use it with consideration of its strength. Its strength is perhaps not with portraits, and i can be proven wrong, but if i were to (not possible) do serious portrait work, i won't even consider this. I like to do a bit of street photography especially at night abroad so it would suit me as i can shoot f1.8 at night but still getting a pretty good dof of around f4.9.

Will i use 4K video? Maybe this might open up a choice for me to try. Just like i'm learning time lapse with the gopro hero4 as it is easily done there.

All in all, i get quite excited as it reverts me back to some freedom in shooting and i see it as a fun camera to carry around, i can also bring it to worl as it is so compact and i can shoot on my way home. I see a great use for it, but not sure about you.

Yes. I use mine alot too as its easy to carry around, not heavy and no fuss. The EVF is a godsend for people with long sightedness. And it helps the camera does a mean panoramic shot too! Now if they can include constant f/1.8 and a 5 time zoom for Mark V, that would be super duper great! :p

I am enjoying the slow-mo feature on the RX100m4.

These are shot at 250fps (I configured it for 50p, and re-did it to 25p for a 10x slow-mo, and flicker removal)

The slow mo makes this camera so much more attractive to me.. Was considering renting the FS700 for few slow mo shots at the skate park before..

Selling off my gears to fund this new one since I prefer something more compact and 'grab and go'.

Hoping to get a good deal complete with some accessories.
