Sony - RX1

Either way works well. If you have the original lens hood, you probably won't need to put on the lens cap too.

The lens hood is very well made and the metal barrel creates a distance from the lens thus protecting it from scratches.

The main purpose of the lens hood to me is to protect the lens barrel at the manual focus ring. My friend's RX1 has started to get paint loss at the edge of the lens barrel due to knocks and friction when you place the camera on the table, or when you accidentally knock on the table or wall. The paint near the edge of the lens barrel drops off easily exposing silver colour, or dents. Quite ugly.

With the lens hood on, it helps to block and cover the edge of the lens barrel, and thus protect the paint work.

Have checked out the compatible lens hood (Made in China type). Material looks firmsy with rough edges and paintwork is quite poor. Not sure whether it will last or will it scratch the camera instead.

The original one is made of very high quality metal - like the other RX1 accessories, it is Made in Japan and paintwork, edges, all smooth and bling bling.

Of course, quality comes with cost - $249 for lens hood!

Agreed that a hood on the RX1 will have added protection, and minimize flare as well.

Gotten a 3rd party hood from ebay for ~$15 including shipping. Quality wise it's rock solid, made of metal with smooth edges. Doesn't feel a bit inferior to that of the original one, but it's a screw in type so not as elegant if you need to add some filters.

Would love to own the original hood but just can't justify myself paying 200+ for a piece of lens protection.

I am using the $10 ebay hood for my RX1 too. No complains at all. Considering the hood is so vital as a physical protection of the lens, it would pain me less if the $10 hood takes a few scratches for the lens. I'm sure if it was a $250+ hood taking a beating, it'd really hurt man.. Maybe soon we'll be talking about buying protection for the $250 hood....

Indeed.

I'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend that's pretty enough to be a model, smart & strong enough to be studio assistant when I need a hand and she loves to go out and take her own photos as well.

Am I lucky or what? ;-)

Share some pics

Bought my RX1 from Sony Store last week. Really like the full frame sensor and Zeiss lens, but holding it makes me feel very fragile maybe because I have bigger hands. Is there such a thing like hand grip that I have seen on RX100 for RX1?

The "thumbsup" is quite nice but it will cover the hotshoe and it is VERY expensive. Not sure how much better will it help with the grip though. Any buddies here can share your experience? Saw an original thumbsup, and it is very well made - written as Made in Japan.

Also learning to use this camera for a few days now. Really used to cameras with viewfinder... finds it weird to shoot just by looking at the LCD screen. May have to try out the EVF/OVF. Any buddies have used a OVF and is the bracketing accurate?

What an expensive "trial" of a camera.... hahhahaha.......

Already available, some bros are using a dry cabinet for that. Just be careful to keep it inside.

Mind sharing which seller from ebay did you order yours from? Can PM me?

Just bought a Sony 49mm front lens cap and kept the metal one. Fit nicely and can perfectly fit with the original hood.

With the original hood on, the metal lens cap is slightly hidden within and quite easy to drop it when try to uncap it. The original plastic lens cap is slight thicker and thus easier to uncap.

Just got the thumb rest too. Very nicely made, much better quality than Tim's thumbs up. Will be even more perfect if it can be used with the EVF, but this one does not have electronic contacts. Realized have been bringing the RX1 out without the EVF, so kinda used to shooting without EVF. The thumb rest helps quite a bit with stability!

The paint on the lens cap could be scratched, especially at the corners. So take extra care of it!

i can never get used to using the RX1 without the EVF. it just feels.... weird.

Felt weird for me without EVF in the beginning too.

But when I have the EVF, the positioning of the EVF makes me cover the LCD with oil since I am a right eye shooter. Also finds the EVF a little protruding from the nice compact body, especially that I am using a full casing.

After shooting without the EVF, it is not bad at all. The thumb rest and the gariz case helps to provide stability, and now can shoot without the EVF.

The auto focus works very well for me and seldom need to use manual focus. Even with manual focus, the focus peaking is quite sufficient to use the LCD to focus.

Getting used to the thumb rest now, and finds it an indispensable accessory now. Helps a lot with stability, and maybe I am used to having the thumbs up for my M9P and X-Pro1 and X100 previously, it seems to be a must have for me.

The lens hood is important as well, but for those who want to get a cheaper version, sgcamera store carries the cheaper Made in China type that is below $10. Quality can't compare to original of course, but helps to prevent the lens barrel from dents and scratches, which seems to be the weakest point of RX1.

Since u got money to burn get the optical VF. I tried xp1 thumbs up on rx1 it feels good to have extra grip but I feel half naked without evf.
