*SIGH*

Help me decide!

SONY RX100 II or CANON G16?

I can't decide on either the RX100 II - which was argued that it has better colour depth and image quality or the G16 - which has good macro quality.

I don't need to take professional underwater photography but at least decent pictures.

Macro would be nice but I like wide too! I have done some research and comparison and google shows me 'RX100 II IS THE WINNER'

Please enlighten and tell me more between the 2 so I can make a decision!

None of the 2.

Sony RX100. (first model, NOT the model2)

Always my 1st question... BUDGET.

Budget not only for camera... but also cost of the Underwater Housing...

G16 will be much cheaper and affordable with their OEM housing...

RX100 II housing will cost anything from $400USD to $900+++ USD...

Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... so expensive?!

I am looking to pay between S$800 - S$1000 for the camera + housing.

I have heard gooooood reviews on the canon G series and thought RX100 II price was on par with it? - prolly forgot to factor in the cost of its housing.

But if you can get one of this 2 cameras, which would you get and why?

Are there any other cameras within my budget which can also take good pictures just like this 2 cameras?

Personally... I would go rather go for S120 + either the OEM casing... or better still, the Ikelite housing at around $450... should fit into your $1000 (maybe plus abit more) budget.

I'll go check out the s120. How bout Nex 6 and EPL5? Rx100 is too expensive I've to strike off the list :(

The problem you are facing isn't which camera is best... but which camera has an affordable housing/casing. Your budget is up to $1000... depending on model, some camera will have much cheaper OEM casing, most common, Canon & Olympus. But most other models will only have 3rd party housing... in U/W Photography.. 3rd party is usually better and alot more $$$$.

Some of the mirrorless system does have OEM housing... like Olympus PT-EP10 for EP-L5... but casing alone already cost $746 USD...

What about Nikon AW1? That would have been my first choice. No need to pay for extra housing. :bsmilie:

Cannot! It can only go till the depth of 15m. Housing cost about $700? Ahhhhhhhh...

Yes! That's true! Anyway, I went to try out a few of it and kinda decided on G16. It take good pictures on land too! Heh

with your budget, its the G16.

the rest coupled with the underwater housings will burst your budget. And the G16's a very decent camera.

In that case... its time to do your 'Homework' regarding a affordable U/W Housing that fit your budget... each will have its benefits and problem... from Size, Weight and of course, the all important $$$$$...

Much like DSLR... underwater photography is a full system... which will need to include a underwater Strobe for lighting... and the usual Arm & Tray set to support the Strobe. Oh... not forgetting the many miscellaneous stuff needed too...

Personally, I think you should either save up a bit more or look for a used set.

True that $$$ is the concern. As diver-hloc said there would be miscellaneous stuff would come along the way. When the macro bug start to bite you would be thinking of a diopter. The standard today is a 67mm thread while the Canon OEM housing uses another thread size. This means an added cost to buy the adapter. A very important part of the set up that many do not consider when buying an UW set ... strobe. If you get the Ikelite housing (save and cheap) you could consider the Ikelite manual AF35 strobe. It's a simple strobe but more importantly, it works.

I strongly advise against Ikelite manual AF35 strobe... anything from Sea & Sea or Inon would be better.

well, the thread starter is thinking of cost and I think that's a reasonable priced strobe with plate, flexible arm. Also, I have used it for about 30+ dives. No problems ... touch wood 8) and I have used it below 18M for wreck dives oso

With the TS's budget.... getting a Strobe with camera and casing would be quite impossible

The reason why I won't suggest getting the AF35... limited resale value, power output, manual control. Getting a mid-end Strobe will serve better, and can be re-use time and time again, as you upgrade to a newer camera, once you want to get more out of this hobby...

Whatever TS chooses, do enjoy your diving trips. Please share with us your nice dive photos later on.
