Sony or Canon?

I went nikon and came back. I went canon and came back. Both times thinking how extensive their lenses were and i would have lots of fun playing with them.

I was wrong, Twice! Still came back sony.

Whether for IQ or for built quality, they were not really as good as many claimed.

Lenses were also not as cheap as many claimed and in fact are far more expensive if you compare the good grades one. People always tend to compare CZ pricing with c/n ones which is not fair. When you look deep enough, there are still lots of limitations at those camps lens lineup and those so called cheap ones are consumer grade lenses.

If you add in usm, vr, is, etc, they are more expensive and may not have better optical quality either.

My 2cents as a ex canon and nikon user.

Are u sure u need all these long range super expensive lenses?

Even if c/n have hundreds of lenses avail, are you going to buy/need them all?

I would say the most 2-3 for normal shoots unless you going pro.

Agree.. most of us wont even get paid from shooting and how many of us actually print photo?

Before getting my canon , also considering Sony, but at the end, i choose canon. No Regret

One of the things that i envy of sony , they have many sony style center , while canon only at Harbour Front

i would suggest the knowledgeable Sony users draft a table or something like that to compare prices between nikon, canon, pentax ...

it seems that my research on Sony is not extensive enough... as many claimed that Sony have cheaper lenses...

anyway, this chart or table won't benefit me ... as i have bought some Canon lenses already.. but i think it will be a great service to the newbies who are stuck between the few systems...

FengWei from pentax did something like that before... but i guess not as extensive...

Each has their strong points and weaknesses, it depends on which kind of functions you are looking for. Like EOW said, once u master the basics, they are very similar.

There may be other factors to consider, maybe consider which camp your friends are in, possibility of sharing lenses. Or even the brand community here in SG, Alpha i feel does have a stronger bond compared to Canon here, but that could be due to size of the group.

Consider the A33, i think its quite good for its pricing.

I'm currently an Olympus user and was considering A33/A55. I think coming from the 3 smallest community in Singapore Oly, Pentax and Sony the bond in these group are very strong I love the way these groups share and help each other

I would want to ask those who previously an Oly and now a Sony user or vice versa or have used both systems to give some insight and thier feedback between the two?

Oly been always saying thier IQ is one of the best in the industry while Sony is all about latest technology and features. I like the features in A33/A55 but dont really know how good Sony is. I have been using Sony PnS for sometimes now and still have my trusty old Sony H10 with me to date

Hi Albert,

I was an Olympus user before using the E500. IQ wise, it really depends on what you are looking at. In terms of user interface, I would say that Sony is very easy to use, changing the camera settings is pretty easy and fast (based on DSLRs not SLTs). The Olympus was not too bad either. It's quite easy to get the hang of it. One thing I like about Sony is the natural colors of the pictures (I only shoot in JPEG so can only comment on my experience with JPEG outputs), the dynamic range and the details. However, Sony doesn't seem to capture certain colors very well, esp Reds. It seems to blow it most of the time. Of course some will argue that they like the red that way. Similarly, some will appreciate the blues from Olympus but some will find them very fake.

4/3 however has an advantage over the other brands if you need reach. But wide angle wise, I would still chose the APS-C/FF for the lower cost of lenses and noise.

Some things I do not like about the SLTs are the EVF. I still prefer the OVF anytime. Probably when the EVFs improve down the road, I may be able to accept them but definitely not for now. Another thing which I do not like is the menu. As these are more of an 'entry level' cameras, there are lesser dedicated buttons hence changing of settings is not as fast and easy as the DSLRs which I have used. Was playing with the A55 last month and I find that selecting the AF point is a chore as I have to go into the menu to select the point that I want. (Maybe I am not familiar with the cam yet and there may be an easier way to do it).

So far I still find the A700/850/900 has better user interface and picture quality among the other cameras which I have used before, including C & N.

As these are only based on my personal experience, you may want to visit any SonyStyle to try them out yourself.

Thanks bros for the honest and non bias responses Its true even from my PnS Sony H10 (my backup cam) i find the red a bit too red well in some cases I like it, it stand out but some times it attract your attention to it thus you lose the attention you wish to convey to your subject.

I once used EPL1 a m/43 and i find the controls is almost PnS like where if you wish to chance settings will make you stop and tweak around not like the DSLR (Im using E620) you have almost all the setting at your finger tip I find it very handy. I have not tried A55 how's the control and how it feels on my hand so I cant really comment much. I think IQ is subjective higher ISO to me is a plus but I dont really go beyond ISO800 even with my EPL1 before. The only complain I have with Oly is the slow AF in low light but I do learn to overcome it.

I could say I am a tech guy who loves the new technology thats why in all Sony Cam I was awe when I see the A55 specs and feature. I hope I can afford to have two system in my dry cabinet lols.

You are most welcome bro. The AF on the Sony has been pretty good. I was totally amazed when I was told that the A700 could lock it's focus on a wall whcih I have difficulties with some cameras which I have used before. And the AF is pretty fast. Among the systems out there I still like Sony and Olympus currently. The E30 + 12-60mm is a very solid combo which I was yearning to try.

Oh, another thing is that although the A700 was not advertised as a weather sealed body but I have seen someone using it under rain and it's never failed. :thumbsup:

I just set af spot to local and can select af spots using center af. Not sure why it didnt work for u...

I don own a dslt though, was just playing with it in sony style.

That's the reason why I always say "The equipment is only as good as it's wielder".

Every camera system have it's fair share of Pros and Cons, be it Sony, Canon it's no exceptions. Unless any Bros can tell me for certain 100% that the camera that they used now is without any disadvantages (when compared to other brands) and it's the best forever... Anyone? :dunno:
