Sony NX5 and AX2000

I guess most of us know that HDV is on the way out and AVCHD is here to stay. The new NXCAM series are Sony's answer to Panasonic. Recording at 1920x1080@ 24Mbps, the media size and quality has been highly optimised compared to 4:2:0 1440x1080 @25Mbps during the HDV days. HD-SDI should be able to achieve 4:2:2 as the EXMOS sensors are the same as the XDCAM series except the 1/3" size. The latest NLEs like Sony Vegas 9 is supposed to have been optimised to handle the CODEC raw on the timeline. The only setback (IMHO) is the use of Sony Mem stick but as long as the price is reasonable it is like SxS in the XDCAM EX.

The NX5 is the pro ver and AX-2000 prosumer ver. Take note this prosumer ver is very pro as it has full XLR and picture profiles controls. Main diff is the HDMI and HD-SDI output, timecode, etc. But this is what I read so far so there may be mistakes but we shall see. Possibly arriving in Apr/May timeframe.

Likely. Wait till i test the AVCHD2 CODEC. I think Vegas 9 will be able to handle it but nto sure about the rest. NX5 will arrive soon I think. But hang in there.. I think the rest of the players will launch new stuff during NAB in Apr.

The Sony HXR-NX5P will be available by feb. I think this will be a popular model.

You seem to have some connection to this site, since you post their link so many times. Can you please ask them to add price info?

Hi guys,

Expandore is selling the Sony NX5 here:

Price starts from SG$6,261.20.

Kinda ex dont u think? Add a few more $$$ can get the Panasonic HPX172 P2HD. Converts easily to MOV.

I heard some people having problems using AVCHD in Adobe Premiere Pro...

This format is an improvement over the previous AVCHD cameras and it does work well for Vegas 9 as I already had a go at it.

Its a matter of perference I guess. If u compare the specs in detail, the NX5 has a full rastor sensor, so it can deliver HD-SDI in full res. That said, the 172 is a pretty neat cam too.

Have my heart set to buy this babe. Needs to lelong of my HDR-FX1000 and HVR-DR60 first. Will Media Studio 9 (Platinium Pro Pack) works with AVCHD ?

looks nice but price tag is much larger than other shops that are available on internet like d2dchina, ebay, amazon.

I wouldn't take the risk for a high value item thou..

i am also very interested in this cam. looks and sounds powerful. the only thing is I werk predominantly on FCP.... sounds a tough love relationship. Can someone shed some light to get around this?

Yes very tough indeed. we'e tried clipwrap but can't get that to work somehow. our resolution was to d/l a sony plugin to transcode the mts files to apple pro res .mov for FCP editing, which takes almost the same as capturing HDV tape.

but i still think the camera is pretty good even with this tedious workflow.

no problem with my work flow on FCP and Premiere

"no problem with my work flow on FCP and Premiere"
Bro Jopel, how long does your FCP take to log and transfer one hour of AVCHD?

Anyone knows where to get this at a good price in Singapore? So far, the lowest I found is $5500 before gst. It is an export set.

Hey guys, which SD card are you using? Also looking for a UV filter to protect the NX5 lens, any recommendation?
