Sony lost US$6.4 Billion

If not for their PS3, I think sony die already.

heh , guess there are alot of other sony business that brings them the dough. Unfortunately, Gaming only accounts for 11% of Sony Revenue, quite substantial i say.

Actually, out of the US$6.4billion loss , $3.7b comes from write offs from tax credits. Out of the remaining US$2.7b losses, part of it will come from the impairment of assets from the flood and perhaps Bravia inventory. I sense Sony is being aggressive in recognising losses for this financial year

According to this article, the digital imaging division is not safe. http://fstoppers.com/editorial-can-sonys-digital-imaging-division-restore-profits
At the top end, Sony cannot compete with Nikon and Canon DSLRs. At the bottom end, Sony digital cameras has to compete with other cheaper brands.
This is not helped by their decision to make less models with Carl Zeiss lenses. Sony is ruthless in cutting off their product-lines that they want to terminate.

For PS3, the problem is selling it at a loss. Sony Losing Big Money on PS3 Hardware | PCWorld

Good sharing. Unfortunately the fstopper articles lack technical analysis in terms of understanding the quality of earnings from a financial standpoint, and eh using Amazon sales ranking won't provide much comfort on real performance as well.

As for the PS3, yes, the initial cost of the PS3 was cut throat. Sony was making a larger loss for the PS3 compared to Microsoft's loss on the Xbox360, largely due to the specs of the hardware that was put into the system. However that was the climate in 2006, as per the date of the article by pcworld. Usually, the cost of consoles comes down as the product life cycle matures, as the components gets cheaper along with economies of scales reaped through increased productions. So I am pretty sure, Microsoft and Sony would have at least start to make small margins on console sales if not breaking even on them.

Indonesia is the 4th highest population country in the world behind China, India and US. So its really a very big market.

Er...what does absolute population got to do with it? It is the market size, the actual consumers.

I sell stuff in Indonesia, trust me the BBs there.....heh lets just say I could still pick out some blue coloured BBs. Yes it's still dominant, but it's "stagnant" type of dominance. The majority of the folks there use simple Nokia and you can still see 3310, and N73 is already advanced. We actually used to sell 2nds to some shops in Batam, but after about 250pcs decided to quit. Too low a margin, i mean it is "bread and butter" but there are better things to do.

AFAIK my Indo relatives all on Samsung Note/iPhones. New and cool is key for the tech savvy (able to afford in the first place, of course).

agree on your last few words.
New and cool is key for the tech savvy...

my dream was to own a Sony 40 inch Bravia TV... been saving up on my barista income... sad that it's going...

always thought that Samsung was crap for quality though it looks stylish. even my friend's uncle ditched his 60" samsung for a Sony HD 3D projector :bsmilie:

Sony shutting down Bravia? They just came out with new models, and I just bought one Sony 3D HD to watch Zen the way it meant to be watched :bsmilie:

wow exactly my idea too!

Personally... just think most of us need a basic LCD/LED TV... to me, Samsung's 'Smart TV' is kind of pointless when most of us would prefer surfing the Net away from the eyes of other members in the family....

yup... nowadays most of the things can be read/watch on the computer screen. No need to spend many thousands over a tv set.
and i thought Sony just introduce their new TV technology few months ago - Jan 2012.

Crystal LED TV.

Even how good is sony tech, their rrp n availablity kills them off easily. Unless your are a loyal sony fan (i use sony dslr cause of minolta, ha ha) or u like ur friends to says "wa!sony tv leh, ex leh", then u can continue to support it. But my sis, says that their tv really solid. She just upgrade her bravia 32 to 46 n her first tv even newer than mine! Anyway, i hardly on the tv. Those advertisments, really a pest n waste time watching tv. Thats y i record n watch at a later time with option to skip them. Abt 10 to 15 mins per hr show!

I can say their TV service centre is tok kong..! my tv got problem, can not wake up properly.. it has been 1 year and I can not tahan anymore.. so I made appointment. they came, check and recheck my tv can wake up properly.. (it's intermittent problem) so the engineer say, try manual wakeup; after 5 days, I email to them again saying my manual wakeup also not working.. then they came and replace some part in the tv and until now 4 months no more problem!.. I tahan 1 year because i hate to bring the tv to service centre.. I did not know they will come to my house :D

i bought my bravia 46 inch 2 yrs ago. i did a lot of comparism( at shops, side by side) and consideration. Sony still better..i using it for blue ray movie and ps3 games..really no horse run.

for TV shows, i do it on computer.
