how do they compare to each other? wat are the pro & cons? thx.

Perhaps the biggest different is the workflow between HVX's P2 card and Z1's HDV. HVX is great upgrade to the stunning DVX but imho went a step too far in the future with a flash card storage with high cost being the biggest stumbling block. While Z1 is DV with a higher compression.

Z1 have another model which can play and record ntsc and pal format
Go for z1 which can record to tape instead of p2 card

HVX = The best camera in the HDV Range imo.

I base this of picture quality. There are tons more short-films and movies being made by the HVX compared to the other HDV cameras.

At the end of the day you wanna ask yourself what you'll end up shooting.. and if you're into this video biz - or just another person wanting to get the 'best'

couldn't agree more a panasonic sales engineer by the name of teo told me that the cost of a tape or hdv tape is sumting like 10 to 35 bucks depending on range and brand , life span of a tape is like 20 times after deleting and deleting cozing the magnetic field to run off but wif a p2 card it cn be recyled 4 1000 times dun noe hw true it is but this is a truly cost effective way ! btw watch out 4 the next line of panasonic p2 cam the hpx 500 ! very2 cool and its gona overwrite the XDcam pd350 to sleep! :)

Cannot put the HVX in the HDV category leh:nono: Its true HD with 4:2:2 colour sampling using an intra-frame codec as opposed to an MPEG2 inter-frame codec. I'm sure you know this already but based on these 2 factors cannot put them together already.

HVX I consider as true prosumer HD with 'proper controls' unlike HDV cameras (with the exception of JVCs) which do not allow full/exact control over controls like focus ring. Big brother HPX 500  is the professional version. Both can do variable frame rate.

I own a HVX and it's similar to DVX..
Has problems of its own in comparison to Z1..
Onli does HD recording on P2..
HDV though compressed allows you to record to tape..
But quality is definitely better on HVX with its 4:2:2 color sampling..
But it's still not true HD..
Onli wat they claimed..
They use smaller chip to create small camera..
Does not record direct to HD but upsamples.....

Z1 can record the data directly to a portable HDD.

I went the HDV route (have the option of HD-SDI out with my cam) as I cant see myself using tapeless as backing up the media files will be a nightmare itself and thats where the "savings" will go. With tape, at least I have the tape safely stored and can go back to it if my hard disk goes down.

HDV is NOT equal to DVC pro HD

HDV is not really HD at 1440 x 1080i (format which Z1 records)
DVC pro HD at 1980 x 1080

Instead of P2 card there's the Firestore which is much cheaper per Gb in comparision than P2.

So really there's NO comparison, simply different format all together. It's like asking to comparing Mountain Bikes with Road Racing Bikes.

You should compare Z1 to V1 or Canon A1, G1 or H1 and the JVC HY102 or 202 as all these records in HDV format.

DVCPRO HD is also 1440x1080i, the different is actually on the compression.
Only DVCPRO HD and Sony HDCAM can consider HD format accepted in broadcast, other format like HDV or AVCHD are highly compressed HD format.

IMHO, the best format will be the one that is the most convenient and one that you can work out of comfortably. A P2 system will need me to have multiple backups on set (I wun trust my files with just one disk!) and requires a laptop. A HDV system is just like working with normal tape...which is for me, more than reliable. A tapeless system is reliable but will require more hardware to be brought along as compared to a HDV system.

That said, I have read that HDV is accepted by Discovery as well and if I have a "kodak" moment captured with HDV, I seriously doubt it will not be sellable just becoz it is a compressed format.
