Never say too early... years ago I posted on a Singapore ONE forum about my new Coolpix 950 being 2 Megapixels and gave great quality shots... someone from the old National Computer Board responded "Who needs anything more than 640*480, unless its used to fill his ego"...
I just kept quiet... and thought to myself... 'you just watch'

Bill Gates once said computers does not need more than 640k of RAM. He's wrong. But he's still a billionaire.

That's very expensive. Considering 8MP is too high resolution for many people...One wonders why Sony comes out with a digicam at 8MP...

Die lah...at this price...it will be really be squeezed out by Canon's 300D...
(decided not to argue for 8mp)

well Sony makes CCDs for other cameras. 8mp shd flood the market end of next year, just like the f707's example.

Hi there....

FYI....in this electronics wafer fab thingy........
Advancement = miniaturisation.

Its just the true fact that the life cycle of any wafer fab things is that once that particular technology is used for a while, the prices will drop.

I got my 2Mpix Powershot S10 in 1999 and then it cost $1000. And look what you can get with $1000 now....4Mpix.

This is just like the MicroProcessors....P1,P2,P3,P4 etc.....once that particuler technology (miniaturisation+new caches etc...+logics) has been reach the cost of making it will drop. And hence lowering the price.

Looking it in another perspective.....it all depends on the "makers" to control the price. These "makers" plays with the concept of Demand and Supply for their maximum profit...!!!!

8Mpix...is not that far away.........and price wise....- will drop obviosly.....one day( a few months, a year or two...god knows...)......but once the "Makers" feel that they need the infrastructure to make newer chios.....why waste time in making the obsolete devices......might as well spend the wafer fabs factory on some newer "profitable products"......

I'm still wondering if one day there will be camera makers who can make a upgradable CCD (imager).....heheehe.....change the IC ...like changing film....

regards,
me

I've this colleague from Hong Kong. Told me that the grey market ( 水货 )version of the 828 is going for S$1,4xx.

what!
if that version already $1.4k..
(hmmz.. maybe still can get lor.. haha... when compared to a 717) =X

i strongly hope that the retail won't be higher then 1.8..
=X

According to what I was told. it will be 1.8K if everything (exchange rate etc...) stays the same.

1.8K is still X for many people though, especially if they consider the Canon Kiss Digital, which is only 1.999K.

Personally I prefer the 828 over Kiss.

I guess it has been debated early at the beginning of this thread, DSLR has a lot of hidden cost.

EOS 300D may only cost ard $1.7K without lens. U still need to get the lens that can measure up to 828 range, the "28-200mm" variant. These super zooms from either Canon or Tamron will set u back for another $600++.

Dun forget, the quality of these super zooms are way below the quality & sharpness of Carl Zeiss "T" lens of 828. If u want much better lens, be prepare to spend more money & bare the weight of these hi-quality glasses.

Both 300D & 828 has pros & cons, lets not get into it now...it will be endless... :p

Unless u see yourself planning for solid DSLR system, u can start with 300D & start collecting lenses now. They'll cost u a bomb, but they sure worth it if u dun mind spending more. :D

Otherwise, F828 is a good choice for hassle free shooting yet with good quality pictures.

I am waiting to buy this F828. Why? because of CF Card and the battery is long life running. I have been using cybershot since F505, F707 and F717. I will keep my F717 as a backup digital cam. F828 is using 28-200mm. This is what I needed. :o  ;)

OT...but why sony can't come out a DSLR... link up with 4/3 system ...coolz.

Be sure you can stomach the extra size and weight of the F828.
It is not like a upgrade along the existing line........

Sony sure made my saliva drip this time.. looks like a hell of a bazooka.. yummy.. 828.. looks pro in black, yet extremely stylish in design.. not bad features too!! finally supports CF card !!!, resist... i must..

I predict pricing of at least 2K+, if it's about 2.2, I foresee it won't be very hot because a DSLR body is available at that kind of cost. :)

But it is a pretty good spec camera, now is to see the image quality captured on the 8MP CCD. 5mp is about 1.5MB at Fine resolution, 8MP would be about 2MB? Shooting raw will take forever then.

The file size would be larger. On my F707, a picture already takes up 1.5-2MB of space.
