Hi guys,

any advise against buying an Export set? Or is it a matter of luck:)
I ask because there's a significant saving compare to the 1 year Sony warranty.

cheers

Decision is entirely yours for taking such risks.

However, if you want an opinion, I've never had a professional Sony broadcast product failed on me during critical moments in my entire career in broadcast. Yes, they do suffer from wear & tear, etc, but since EX1 doesn't have any mechanical parts, I should think it is quite safe & robust to last you pass a year without any issues.

Do think about the savings vs. repair costs if *touchwood* imaging sensors, LCDs or logic boards go kaput within a year though...

Thanks for for the advise.

On another note, what about the MACK warranty offered by dealers? If one purchase the Mack warranty, do we need to ship out our camera for repair? Or it's a matter of sending to Sony Singapore and claim from Mack.

cheers

sibeiblur:rolleyes:

Not too sure about that arrangements.

Perhaps you should check with your dealer about that and share with us your findings.

Mack will contract a local service house to replace the parts. Bear in mind Sony will not be liable for such repairs. BUT still, I had an FX1e for about 2 years and it never failed on me even if it was from the consumer division.

My suggestion is to go ahead with export set if you are a light user/ hobbist. Local warranty is a must for production houses that use the cam regularly.

Thanks for the insight guys.

engr, as you mentioned that Mack will contract a local service house, would this service house not be Sony Singapore, especially for parts replacement?

I'm most likely to go with the export set but just want to know more about the significance of Mack Warranty. I'm guessing that if the camera is to be repaired in Sony Singapore, I would pay for a Mack Warranty, definitely work out to be cheaper than a local set. Of course there's all the paper work involved like writing to Mack etc and the process might be a bit longer.

To conclude, so long I don't have to pack the camera and send to Mack in USA, then the Mack Warranty is pretty good deal.

cheers

its ur own choice...90% of the time Sony products are pretty reliable, but if things do fail in the first year, it might be costly for you.

I had a DXC-D50P failed on me on its 10th month of service, thankfully it was covered by Sony.

Of course its rare....once in 10 years...but when it happens...well...too bad if you're not covered.

buy the MACK warranty. For repairs, they will ask you to sent to local SONY and after the repair, you will pay SONY first and MACK will reimburse you later. Moreover, your re-sale value is higher with some form of international warranty. Buy it and you will not regret.

Really? Last me Expandore told me they will contract someone to service locally. Might not be Sony. That would be good news.

Sibeiblur, I suggest u call up Expandore and check it out yourself. Pls update us here.

Don't take 100% what expanxxx said.......Before I buy my cam, told me that I just sent the faulty cam to them and they will take care of the rest........Diff story altogether. Stated very clearly on MACK website we need to sent to a local replar shop authorised by MACK (most likely SONY local repiar house).

In summary, Expandore wash hand liao once the cam out of their office. Actually, I also don't want expandore to handle, dun know how they handle your cam , later anyhow throw you also don't know

Ok guys,
here's the email reply from Mack

Mack Camera & Video Service does not have contracts with service centers in the USA or overseas. For international repairs, we work with manufacturer authorized repair facilities in your area. To locate the service center near you, please call the manufacturer to find out who in your area is authorized to repair your equipment's make and model. We have found that the authorized service centers change from time to time and it is better for the customer to find out who is authorized to repair their model through the manufacturer. If there is not an authorized service center in your area, the unit would have to come into our facility for repairs. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reply back.

Thank you,
Cheryl

I would like to think,
Sony Singapore is the manufacturer,
Sony Service Centre is the manufacturer authorized service facilities
Unless, Sony tell me to fly my kite somewhere else.

Seriously, I'm not too worried about Sony QC as rightly brought up by Melvin and DXNMedia. So far I have only sent 2 VTRs and a Monitor back to Sony for repair after a few years of heavy usage. Nothing ever broken in the first year.

Decision is final, EX1! haiz to panny HPX 170.....why still 1/3 ccd and the lcd..? haiz......

Any of you uses Sandisk 16GB SxS? I see that it's few hundred cheaper than the Sony.

thanks guys for the input, can PM me if you don't mind sharing the best EX1 deal in town....

appreciate,

sibeiblur:rolleyes:

I've called up Sony to check.
Will get back to you once I have further info regarding MACK warranty.

Gotten more info & insight about MACK warranty from various sources.

Based on my deduction of the situation, they are like a 3rd party insurance agent.
You buy external warranty, they take the risk. It is unknown which service centers they will send your unit to.

Based on my enquiries, here are some replies that I've paraphrased:
"Not very reliable.."
"Customers had bad experience before..."
"Unit will not be serviced in Singapore"
"You will be asked to send unit to other countries where they have agreements with 'authorised' service centers"
"Sony Singapore doesn't have any known agreements with Mack"

Not very sure about Expandore's arrangement with Mack warranty, but if you're really not that comfortable without a warranty I strongly advise that you go with a full local warranty set.

If I'm the one making a purchase decision, it's either export set or full local warranty.

i have mack warranty for my panasonic dvx102b (from expandore). To my understanding, here's the simplfied steps...

1) register online for mack when u get the warranty
2) when unit is faulty, apply online to apply repair authorization number (meaning citing equip fault to see mack covers that fault or not, eg damaged LCD cannot claim)
3) bring for service (for my case panasonic service center)
4) file claim from mack with repair invoice (which means you have to pay for repair first)
5) mack will credit $$$

think the steps are something like that.... i have no experience with mack regarding repair and hope will not have to experience with it!

Ask expandore for the steps ba..... if you buy from them, they should know how to do it... i hope....

Cool...Thanks for sharing the info bro. :D

that's exactly what I wrote. I am in the process of filing a repair with MACK, will update here with the progress

Hope it's not your EX1 . Yes, please keep us updated. thanks

the Sandisk 16Gb will very well.. BTW, Sandisk is the OEM for Sony Sxs =)

updates

1) Sony singapore gave me a quotation for my repair
2) I forwarded the quotation to MACK for review and approval
3) MACK revert the next day with approval for the repair by SONY singapore
4) I sent my cam to Sony for repair
5) Sony completed the repair within 24 Hours (Mr Goh from Sony was real nice guy)
6) I will be collecting my cam from Sony Wisma tomorrow night
7) I have to fax or sent the invoice to MACK
8) MACK will issue a cheque to me. MACK also said payment by Paypal possible in their website. I am checking with them on Paypal payment.

As you can see, the extra steps will be communicating with MACK, the rest of the steps are with SONY which is standard if it is local sony warranty.

So please judge for yourself if it is worth to get the MACK warranty. 2 years MACK warranty cost you $170 usd. Local Sony warranty is 1 year only and expect to pay between S$1K to 2K more.

My own preference is MACK warranty, 2 years and it is international warranty. If I am not happy with the CAM I can sell anytime on Ebay and fetch a higher value. Anyway, I don't expect high end cam to fail so often. This time round, I sent in my EX1 for the battery drainage problem and also get them to upgrade my firmware to the latest 1.05. All earlier version of EX1 has the battery problem which can be fixed by changing some internal circutry board.

Do keep us updated once you have Mack reimbursed you with the repair fees.
