Can TS or HX-1 owner post some night shots? Seriously considering this camera and a Canon 500D. Read tons of reviews, but will be good to have a local owner who can post Night landscape shots of this camera. Thanks.;)

How to compare? It's still a small-sensor prosumer vs. a DSLR.

You shouldn't be comparing this camera even to an entry level DSLR... shutter lag, speed of menu operations, flexibility in selecting modes, and many other small things that DSLR users take for granted... so if you're a DSLR user looking at this, do bear in mind it's a prosumer, no where near the A300 or A700 or A900 that you're using... get used to it lar...

Wah comparing with D500 wah say why not try to compare with Leica G9 more appropriate.;)

wah! probably just a lil overexposed..

I am serious.. this beats my A700+70-200G hands down.. I can never get moonshots as big and clear as this on that combi..

Thanks for the comments. I cropped the shot, otherwise not so big (there is a limit to the 20x zoom afterall haha)

The moonshot is also heavily edited...

The Bukit Jalil stadium panos shows up the shortcoming of small sensor cameras... it looks washed out as you're shooting into the sun... it's less of an issue with the DSLRs... but nevertheless the HX1 is a very capable camera... definitely good enough for me if I wasn't into SLRs... only thing it's pretty expensive...

Is this camera good for taking fast moving object like fish in the tank?

Hi All,

Got this Sony for the wife last Friday and was very impressed with the performance of the camera, especially in the image quality and the easy to use features.
Managed to buy this from Sim Lim at nett $800 incl gst (with warranty) after going through several shops. The catch however...must pay cash.

That's a really good price. Does it include any accessories? Such as tripod, mem card, pouch etc?

I just visited the megaxtex and the price for HX1 was 919 with tripod, and 2 memory sticks.
(Yes its 2 mem stick, cos they don't have a pouch for it.)

I'm visiting Japan next month, and thinking of getting it there instead.

maybe he's doing MO from japan?

opps. sorry guys, i might have caused misunderstanding.

actually i'm travelling to japan.

thinking of doing MO for this camera. But prob not worth it, cos someone got it @ $800 locally.

Twilight Mode
btw, can someone post a pic using the twilight mode? I read that its some form of paranoma stitching done within the camera, but using higher resolution. Thus is has less noise compared to just using its preset paranoma features.

I tried the paranoma...and the one thing i didn't like is that is people are walking, they appear squashed. But I suppose this is bo bianz.

Bro you can't shoot pano with things or people moving in your frame. You'll get ghosting or blur images and trails... also the squashed look might be due to the lens distortion and the software correcting for it...

Yup...that's true.

I mentioned this issue because in sony ericsson phones, they also have a paranoma function. But its works slightly different. It requires you to snap 3 frames one at a time. Then it will auto stitch straight away for you. So at least you can wait for things to be "moving less" before you snap. The paranoma effect is quite acceptable.

However for HX1, the paranoma is taken in a continuous movement. So no opportunity to wait for ppl to pass by first etc.

But it seems the twilight mode can achieve what I'm saying and has better quality? Any confirmation on this?

My suggestion is that if you're shooting with people moving in your frame... then shoot against their movement... ensure that they do not turn up in your later frames and you pan and shoot the pano... e.g. a person is in the extreme left of your pano field of view. You should start shooting frames from the right to left... somewhere in between the person moving will be caught on one of your shots... ensure that the person sits somewhere in the middle of the frame, and only one frame in the series contains that person (who's moving). This way you eliminate ghosting due to movement...

i was trying out a hx1 display set and i used the paranoma. And I tried exactly what you described. There wasn't a ghosting issue. But the person in movement became squashed. Because the camera was moving one way, and the person moving in the opposite direction.

The person became squashed cos he was at the edge of your frame... Remember that the lens will introduce distortions... the camera's firmware will warp each frame to match edges, points and features from frame to frame. Also if you're shooting at wide-angle (say 28mm and wider), then the distortion is significant and the distortion will be significant. Also the wider the coverage of your pano, the more distorted the image will look...

I post a pano which is taken the traditional way. I shot at 35mm vertically. I stitched about 11 vertical shots... usually with vertical stitching, you don't get any distortions cos there is enough of the frame to crop after stitching... i.e. the Lower Kananaskis Lake shot I posted earlier... but in this case below, the field of view was > 180 degrees and hence there is a fisheye lens effect... the curvature is due to the lens distortions and the extremely wide field of view.
