Sony Cybershot WX-1

Hi there, I'm new here, Found this web after searching for thread in WX1. Happy to see one active community here.

Anyway just bought one of these.
I can see that the pic out of the cam isn't much sharp and vivid especially in bright day light but the I love the night shot.

So I've found a few member here tend to use Post Processing, but me myself are totally new to Post Processing stuffs and need some recomendation on the software and guidance on improving pic quality on this handy little WX1

Hello...welcome.

You can try Picasa. It's free and easy to use.

You can also try Faststone or Irfanview both are freewares for basic adjustments.

thank you both for sharing ;)

hehe will try all three of em .. btw the low light ability and senstivity of this cam really amaze me, the light in the picture is even more than wht my eye can see.. or isit my eye is getting old :bsmilie:

ahh guys, i did something terrible to my cam.

i accidently almost droping it on the floor and grab it back but the bad is, i've press my hand/finger onto the lens(quite hard). althought the zooming is still functioning ok(thank good) but theres some deep oily fingerprint left over on the 24mm lens.

so basically can how am i suppose to remove it? using alcohol?

You can buy a lens pen to clean it off. There smaller sizes to cater to small lens.

ic ic, so lens pen is a brand of a product right? i've posted to ask here since there are doubt in me on cleaning lens. as normally they would use some soft rags + some breath to clean off or soft rags + some lens cleaning solution or using cotton buds.

but they mention different lens, has different coating, to not melt or scratch the coating, different method and cleaning solution should be use.

since WX1 is using Sony's G Lens which they normally features in DSLR, so i thought might just be extra cautious as high quality lens maybe sensitive

lenspen is both a brand and the equipment. just go to any of the major camera shops got sell. ard $15 if i i remember correctly. its basically a pad on one end, just go around in circles on the lens to clear off any smudges. can use multiple times, so can come in handy when your lens get dirty.

Thank you DiGdUb,
Is really a good recommendation.
I've surf thru its official web to find out more, its seems like it really works well as the concept of us cleaning glass using newspaper which contains carbon.

yap, lenspen is good... has been using it to remove dirt and smudges...

After some try with the PP software, I found out that is not easy to get good result. Faststone has some friendly interface and nice batch mode, Irfanview is a good viewer but the batch mode is not so user friendly. Can someone reccomend thread to read about PP.

I really don't know the proper procedure to PP. Like, which should start first, (resizing, contrast, saturation, sharpening)
I'm doing like contrast-saturation-sharpening-resize but then the picture will all goes overly processed after resize. I really cant figure out what value should I use on each stage to produce a nice yet natural pic(not like very much out of PP stuffs) like what I see in this thread. I usually get those very heavy looking picture after PP.

when resizing, theres hack lots of algorithm method like (Bell,Bicubic,Bilinear,Bspline,FastLinear,Hermit,Lanczos3,Mitchell,Linear,Nearest,Triangle)
as well as some rule of thumb like what should a 10mp 4:3 ratio pic resize to, basically example of pic posted here with some really good result is around 800x600.
7mp 16:9 resize to wht. Do we use pixel or inches. Lets say even I would want them to be printed to some normal hardcopy of photo 4R sized, what should I do to my jpegs.

hi guys...been shopping around for a compact camera...preferably with some manual modes.
given that Sony WX1 is good in low light, anyone tried taking pics during concert/indoor performances?

Junseng I will just quickly mention that the general rule is resize first to whatever size you want then do your post processing like sharpness and contrast. Not only more accurate but will work faster too since you'll be working with the smaller file size. As to the other stuff about what to do specifically for your pics I cannot say as it's each person's individual taste. For me the subtler change the better. If you want to do more detailed post processing you should use some other program besides the faststone or irfanview. Try Gimp for a free one that's pretty powerful. You can also download lots of free filters and such for it.

erm, anyone did a comparison between the TX1 and WX1? though the lens used is different.

A quick feedback on the WX-1 bought at SITEX 2009 with other candidate low-light compacts:

- Fujifilm F200EXR: Owned. Unfortunately the camera never quite lived up to my low light expectations. Probably handicapped by it's slow lens at f3.5 (why? why? why?) and low flash power. Not to mention a glad departure to Fuji's relatively unfriendly software interface.
Fujifilm's EXR window of advantage lasts less than 6 months. (and Ricoh's overpriced CX1 probably never even got off the ground - lesson: never hold the consumer to ransom because your competitors will beat you to it and they are left with a camera that is obsolete even before it takes off.)

- Canon S90: With its f2 lens it is supposed to be canon's challenge to Lumix LX3. But a plain vanilla test comparison with the relatively slower WX-1 lens at f2.4, at same shutter speed of 1/30 yields an increase of ISO of around 50. (Without hand held twilight turned on). Once that comes into play, the difference is minimal. With it's fast CMOS sensor, it takes 6 pictures and combines them into 1 to achieve low noise. WX1 also has the amazing panorama feature, is able to take bracket exposure shots +1/-1 EV for entry level HDR photography, AND is a good $150 LESS than Canon's way over-priced S90 which offers nothing new except the amazing price tag and their skin thickness to sell at that price.

- Lumix LX3: No experience with that, but given the close performance of WX1's F2.4 lens to LX3's F2 and lacking WX1's 5x optical zoom, panorama feature, LX3's irritating lens cover, difference in physical size, not to mention the huge difference in price tag, it's either Panasonic seriously start slashing the price or come up with LX4 or 5.

My main consideration for compact cameras is low light performance and physical size.
My experience has been the larger the camera, the less you will actually bring it out and use it, not to mention your family members will not appreciate having to lug that around even if you don't.

I believe that other factors such as image sharpness is no longer an issue with similar class compacts on the market now. Not interested in nit-picking photos zoomed up 10x to see a strand of hair.

So there - Sony's Cybershot WX1 has set a new standard in the compact market that none of the competitors has an answer to yet. Sony is selling WX1 at sitex at $599 bundled with the following:

- 7" Sony digital picture frame
- Extra Sony WX1 battery
- 8Gb card
- Tripod
- Screen protector
- Case

Mscolor is offering at $530 but with only case and 8gb card. Got it at sitex because the battery probably costs around $20+, screen protector another $10, which makes the photo frame go for around $40 which usually costs around $200. Useful for upcoming birthday / house warming gifts.

Okay wow I just read this thread and found these photos cool.

Seems like the WX-1 is a good grab :) Maybe I'll get that cuz I'm looking for a new compact camera to replace the Sony T200 I lost during transit :\

How much is it roughly?
