Sony Cybershot WX-1

Yo digdub, what's the size limit for panos? I notice all the sweeping panos are the same size (aspect ratio also)... is there a fixed size or can you choose? Another question - can you pan in vertical/portrait mode?

The quality of the shots look pretty impressive... none of the fuzziness associated with small sensor cameras especially at high ISO... so tempted to dump all my PnS (got 2) and grab this one...
the twilight handheld mode really does an amazing job for low light scene. :)

The size is fixed at 4912x1080 for pano.

You can pan either vertical (up or down) or horizontal (left or right).

Thanks! A bit small though... but cannot pan using portrait mode for horizontal right?

Very impressive photos!! wonder the TX-1 can achieve close... I really like the Tx-1 form factor.. but no f/2.4 :(
Any idea how much TX-1 if WX1 can get $530... hmmm...
sorry abit out of topic.. but I believe sony lovers won't mind... just called MSColor.. Tx-1 going for $590 with 8GB card and casing.. I am going down today

in case we forget, it does day shots too. :D

Pretty nothing much to pan at 1080 pixels right?

Well... it depends on how much you want to take in with your panorama... my panos that I stitch typically come from 11 - 25 individual portrait shots... with such a long pano, it's better to have more vertical reach to balance the pano...

more with some editing.

It's not that hard. I just put my pics all in one folder and use a batch picture conversion program to do it all in one automated action. No big deal.

Vs. F200exr I had no interest in it because no HD video especially no zooming HD video that the wx1 has. I also didn't like that it has reduced size to 6mp for high iso mode.

Here's something more impressive with low light. The wx1 has a mode called handheld twilight mode. Takes a whole series of pics then merges them to process out noise.

Here is a shot of a dark hallway approximately as the eye see's it.

Here is using handheld twilight mode +2 ev. I think it bumps it to iso 3200 then smoothes it out in processing.

Your F200 can't do this technique can it? I think the fuji F70 can do it but not as good because it has less amount of shots.

WOW. i am really impressed!!!

did you have to use a tripod for these shots?!

my biggest need right now is for a camera i can use in indoor settings with dim lighting like bars and restaurants, taking pictures of myself with friends (ie. typical camwhore ^_^ ) so if i use the twilight mode and my hand is not entirely steady, does that mean it won't be able to achieve that kind of result?

i'm almost convinced, especially with that pano feature and the fact that it's such a small size...

hi guys,

we all know the wx1 is excellent in low light...however there is some negative comments bout using it in daylight.

any wx1 users are able to feedback on this? seems color production is not as vivid/accurate in daylight. =)

one of the advantages of the handheld twilight mode in addition to the lower noise is the ability to use very low shutter speeds without a tripod. this shot below is at 1/13 secs at 120mm equiv handheld.

i find it ok. maybe just need to turn up the saturation in pp if the colour or contrast is not appealing enough.

If you pixel peep yes the daylight shots are not as good as top P&S but is is every bit comparable to any P&S. This P&S is permanently in my everyday bag.
hehe need further test and more durians ?. :bsmilie:

I have enabled the ability to download the original image from the old WX1 comments that I put up so you can see for yourself.
There are some daytime mage that you can download.

Maybe if I have time will do a side by side test of WX1 and the Nikon 24-120mm and D700/D300/D200 just for fun.

dennis...very stress nw...

For WX1, i realli like the 24mm, twilight mode, pano and size. but the daytime shots colors not really to my liking and i dun like to PP after shoot....

Canon s90, i love the f2.0~f2.8 lens for creative shots, nice color out-of-cam daytime shots and its handling...

how how how?? eat more durians to solve my dilemma? hahahaha....

Seems like you already answered your own question...

Wah solution very simple lah.
Buy both....
Get the best of both worlds.

BTW I like one feature in Canon that others don't have and I missed it.
The one where you can fixed one colour and leave the rest in Black & white.
This mode can be very creative and I like it very much.
Not much publicized by them but if they come out and improved on it and say can fixed more than one colour and leave the rest in B&W I will get one.

For now WX1 remains my P&S of choice.

No I did not need to use tripod. I just did it handheld and used the twilight mode with +2 ev. If your hand is not steady the twilight mode will process out the shaking.

I just went by a temporary Sony booth at Bugis and one of the salespersons told me they're there till this Sunday 15 Nov and they're offering the WX1 with 8GB card, carrying case, lanyard, SDW course (worth $85) and an extra battery for the pretty price tag of $599 after GST.

SO. VERY. TEMPTED.
