no black and white, do your homework and decide

the new olympus have art filter or what (dunno)

hello all! i'm very new to dslr but i've been planning and saving up to buy one. have been thinking of buying sony alpha dslr camera! but my friend, who is very pro-olympus, dont really agree with me leh? cause she feels its not good? haha. anyone here can give me some advice on which one to buy? hehe. thanks! :D

Olympus is in trouble... Sony's already #3 now, and the Olympus system uses the 4/3 sensor size, so you lose in dynamic range.

To me, larger sensor is always better... so SONY would be better... the much smaller 4/3 sensor has its limitation... although I think if you look at the real world shots by Michael Reichmann at Luminous Landscape, it is still a capable camera... but check this out... it uses the 4/3 sensor but the format is Micro-4/3... looks good actually... http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/dark-side.shtml

hi Rashkae, why would the 4/3 sensor size causes the loss of dynamic range?

As user of both the sony and olympus myself....if u are looking for a small and compact camera, the oly e420 and e620 will be a much better camera to carry around,
colour, user interface wise..it is one of the best camera around at the given price point...anything bigger than that...u are better off with A700 and A900 which are as heavy as the olympus higher tier camera e30 and e3....but with better af performance n detail especially at 100% cropped.
The olympus lenses are potentially the sharpest and best value at price range below 2k with it 12-60mm and the panasonic 14-50..good enough to beat the crap out of the canon L and nikon trinity lenses and also the old sony G 28-70....only to be let down by it own sensor technology which seem unable to resolve at much as detail. For their end lenses their prices will cost u more than 3k...
with a heavy bodies and ultra expensive lenses and below par sensor and af performance...u are better off with the any of the competitors.

Because it's tiny. It's even smaller than APS-C sensors, with an equivalent crop factor of 2x.

Actually the Oly lenses are so good only because of the sensor size... the very small image circle results in better glass as it's much cheaper and therefore more and better lenses may be produced... but the excellent lenses end up outresolving the sensor it seems... it's a little like shooting oneself in the foot...

yup, the sensor is smaller and i see limitation with it even though they have very wide angle lens. i don't know much about the technical stuff, that's why i don't understand why sensor size affects dynamic range? because more captured detail (from larger sensor) allows to tweak the dynamic range?

They actually don't have very wide angle lenses until recently... the widest was 14mm which with the 2x factor would end up giving you a 28mm field of view which really is just moderately wide... the latest lenses are about 10mm which gives you 20mm but it does not still give you the ultra-wide angle of 16 or 17mm...

did she happen to explain why Sony or any other camera is not good compared to Olympus?

in my opinion, comments such as not good are not very constructive and best ignored.

Huh? You don't know they have wide angle lenses?

7-14mm in SHG family and 9-18mm n standard family. With 2x crop sensor, they are 14-28mm and 18-36mm.

ya, i though they have a 7-14mm, and also 9-18mm standard lens. I am not a olympus user, so I don't how they compared.

The 7-14mm too expensive for me and the problem is when shopping for 3rd party lenses. I don't think there will be any manufacturer that produces lenses at that range. The closes will probably be the Sigma 10-20mm.

where u got the sigma 10-20? how much?

thanks for the info

I bought my Sigma 10-20mm in Sweden at a very nice price. If i recall correctly, after the superb discount, I think it's around $550, brand new.

Btw, can any1 guide me on how to post pics in CS?
I'm really lost on this.
Thanks

No I'm not aware of this lens... but on clicking the link, wow! The distortion is quite significant... anyway, basically there aren't any affordable ultra-wide angles... at least I don't know any...
