minolta/sony 75-300 the kit u got is a full frame lens....Thks. I also hv a kit 75-300 which I cant find DT mark anywhere. Does it mean it can be used on FF w/o vignetting?
All old Minolta, KM lenses made before the Dynax 7D and 5D were full frame lenses - meaning they covered the 35mm negative size. 35mm negative film size is referred to as full frame - ie. full 35mm frame... so the size of a FF sensor is the same as that of a 35mm colour negative. So any lenses that would work perfectly on a 35mm film camera would also work properly on a FF sensor DSLR.
But as full frame sensors were very expensive a decade ago, manufacturers decided to shrink the sensor size for 35mm DSLR. The 35mm still applied cos of carry over from the film era. The new size was called APS-C (full frame is APS-H). This is quite a bit smaller than a FF sensor. So lenses were made to cover only the APS-C sensor, we refer to these are digital lenses sometimes... for SONY it's the DT range, for Nikon it's the DX range, etc... so the kit lens SONY/KM 18-70mm DT is a APS-C lens. It will cover completely only a APS-C sensor. Because the mount for the two types of lenses are identical (the Alpha mount), you can mount an APS-C lens onto a FF camera. Since the coverage is smaller than the FF sensor, you will get an image like the picture in the post above mine... tunnel vision...
You could also mount the FF lenses (e.g KM 17-35mm) onto an APS-C camera (like A700) and these will still work. Of course, the sensor will only use up a portion of a coverage of the lens. The result is there is an apparent magnification, which is simply a cropping of the perspective...
There I hope it helps...
I believe APS-H is slightly smaller than 35mm (1.3x crop factor) - used on Canon 1D series
I think there are only a handful of DT lenses currently for A-Mount.
Sony/KM:
18-70mm
55-200mm
18-200mm
18-250mm
11-18mm
16-80mm
16-105mm
3rd party (Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, etc)
17-50mm
18-50mm
17-70mm
18-250mm
10-20mm
11-18mm

go to http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp to take a look at the lenses specifications. the coverage should say either APS-C and Full Frame, which i guess u should know what it means
and on the lens specifications
and for APS-C lens, it should have these words on it. different brands have different codes
Minolta/Sony - DT
Tamron - i not sure
Sigma - DC
seeing how technology progresses, wldn these DT lenses be worthless when all DSLRs are FF?
mine's this.

DT is clearly written on the site but not written on the lens...which means this lens of mine would hv vignetting on the a900?
jasbay, but the one you post is the sal one which the site clearly states dt. I understand where the confusion comes from. the 75-300 comes in many forms. some produced way back in the 70s while like the one you showed is very new.

I think this is the same lens as yours but it does not state dt. Since it is from sony.sg official site, guess its not a dt lens.
so weird the link he sent state DT... Focus must sack their staffs... :bsmilie:The Sony/Minolta 75-300mm is not a DT lens. This lens is already around in the film days.
Wat abt the std kit 1870? or the SAL 50 1.4? is the wordings "DT" written somehwere? So that I avoid buying DT stuff since may commit to a A900 in future? :embrass:

i think kit lens no longer mean DT lens always for nowadaysYou can go to US Sony website to see:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...0551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=32334
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...0551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=32335
Kit Lens are usually DT Lens meant for APS-C Sensors. Prime Lens like SAL 50 1.4 are usable for Full Frame & APS-C Sensor DSLR.
For more info refer to http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/faq.php#DT_lens
