Sony A7 with M mount lens

wow thanks for the list!

btw where u guys got ur M lens and what adapter u all using? thanks!

Hi brp Noctilux

R lenses gotta ask bro Albertri. I didnt really follow so cant comment.

Bro AhBlack

all F1.4 lenses are fantastic value for money. They are 25% of f1.2 price. Didnt include them becos this is a poison thread. That said I sold almost all my f1.4 for f1.2 lenses cos I realized its not abt value for money anymore. Its abt pride of ownership. Sorry thats another topic altogether.

"Pride of ownership" well said, that's what I'm feeling now... Poison starts to take effect d lol

Frankly I got my M lense from ebay and its a real pain, dunno kenna how many bad copies cos those lenses are like 50 plus years old.
I wont advice anyone to go through this route. For SLR lenses, so far so good through ebay.
Adapter I have both the Novoflex as well as those made in china. Novoflex from agent here, china made from ebay.

See d list at least poison abit nia. U meet him test d lenses. U sure die of poisons.

Someone send me his photo, so that I can avoid eye contact with him if I bump into him on the street!!! Abang Thoth, your photo too lol!!

Eh. We r harmless guys la. Ehem...

U know Andy Lau? Bro Thoth more handsome than Andy Lau so u see someone handsome, just siam....

I am expecting M poison only. So far no one mentioned the Zeiss ZM lenses, they are not poisonous?

A lot of the RF lenses got issues on the A7/r.
A7s appears better for some. (verdict is out there, since its new)

Even some 50mm lenses don't sharpen up to 'good' levels at f5.6 and f8.
So imagine, walking around in Chinatown and you see the Buddha Relic temple for the first time... "Wah!" you say and proceed to stop down f8 and capture the temple, but find that the edges are soft. :o

I have tried the following :
J8, J8m, J3, H103; - all edges considered 'no good'
Leica Summicron 50mm DR - edges only 'ok' at f5.6 while most SLR 50mm would already be at 'excellent'
Industar 61 - no issues
Leica Elmar 50 f2.8 (collapsible) - very good at f8 throughout the frame (I was impressed)

Before anyone says that the problem lenses are the cheapie Russian ones, these lenses all work well on film with the usual characteristics of 50mm lenses (very sharp edge to edge by f5.6 )

Zeiss Biogon designs - color cast, vignetting, edge smearing issues (well documented online)

If you only shoot shallow DOF stuff, then these are non-issues.
But personally, I only use the lenses for interest, size, rendering wide open or near wide open.
If I wanted all round reliable wide open to stopped down, I will go for SLR lenses.

Well said bro pinholecam.

I am 'disappointed' that the M lenses does not work as well on A7 as on crop Sony sensor like 5N. Even if it works ok, considering the price, I would rate the value ratio as very low. Please dont flame me as I have no intention to start a 'war'. Please bear in mind I am a fan of Leica glasses, and I am using a few M glasses on my Ricoh. The best glass (aka Leica) and the best sensor (A7 series ...) does not mean it is the best match. But the R lenses .... thats another story.

Just take it as a digital back that gives you the option to crop down to 1.2x or 1.3x like a M8 or use it FF like an M9. :)

Its still the best digital back for most legacy lenses.

I meant to say the sensor in A7 series camera is fantastic but I will NOT consider buying M glasses to match with A7 cameras unless there are no alternatives. Most other legacy lenses gives better value. Similarly I will not match non leica lenses on leica digital cameras unless there's no alternatives like the CV 12 mm. Just me and my thoughts.

I think the VC 21/1.8 ASPH is properly also a quite nice lens to use on M mount body and A7/r/s!

ya lor hehe another lens on the target list.

Yes.
Totally agree

Hi All, I have been following this thread and got very interested in M lens. In fact I have got myself a A7. Planning to start with a 90mm lens, currently looking at Summicron or Summarit, any kind bro here can share your experience eon these lens? I like to take portrait from a distance. Thank you in advance.

HI bro Goldfishub

Can I ask why Leica M? Why not Olympus 85mm f2.0? Or Minolta 85 mmf2.0? or other slr lens?
At less than half the price of a Leica M summicron, or one eighth the price of an APO 90 mm cron, these are very much better value and their performance is in no way inferior.
If u are going for the Leica brand, then I respectfully suggest Leica full frame digital camera to match with the digital lens. If u are talking about photography and making use of the superb A7 sensor, getting Leica M glasses is really not the best way to go.

This is my opinion only and in no way represent the general view of leica lens fans.

Cheers

No particular reason for Leica, just thought of a light weight 90mm and good bokeh. Also have been my dream to own a piece (ha ha). Thanks for the suggestion, will explore on your recommendations.

The Leica M is not light weight if u are going for the older cron. If u get the newer cron, they are more ex.
Ultimately u should get a nice set (non leica) for your needs. However if u use short tele most of the time, then maybe u can consider but for most people, a 35mm or 50 mm focal length is one to go for.
Join the poison session to see what are the choices. There are many bros with exotic lenses and most are cheaper than Leica but gives lots of personality. I always feel that with the superb A7 sensor, u should get legacy lenses that show the character of the image u are creating. It may be old Mamiya Sekor lenses, or Old Russian lenses depending on what u want to do.
Thats the fun but if u commit too much $$$ on Leica glasses, then ur choice becomes more limited.

Just sharing cheers
